Biography of Hafsa bint Umar

Hafsa bint Omar ﵄ Hafsa bint Omar bin Al-Khattab ﵄. Her lineage was mentioned when her father was mentioned. She is from the Banu Adi bin Ka'b. Her mother and the mother of her brother Abdullah bin Omar are Zainab bint Mazun, sister of Othman bin Mazun. Hafsa was one of the emigrants, and before marrying the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, she was married to Khunnis bin Hudhafa al-Sahmi. He was one of those who witnessed Badr, and died in Medina. When Hafsa became pregnant, Omar mentioned her to Abu Bakr and proposed her to him, but Abu Bakr did not respond to him a word. Omar became angry about that, so he presented her to Othman when Ruqayyah, the daughter of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, died. Othman said: I do not want to get married today. So Omar went to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and Uthman complained to him. the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, said: Hafsa will marry someone better than Uthman, and Uthman will marry someone better than Hafsa.

Then he proposed to her to Omar, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, married her. Then Abu Bakr met Omar, peace be upon him, and said: Do not find it in your mind to be Ali, for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, mentioned Hafsa. I was not going to divulge the secret of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. If he had left her, I would have married her. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ, married her in the year three, according to most scholars. Abu Ubaida said: In the year two years of history (1), he married her after Aisha, divorced her once, then took her back. Gabriel ordered him to do so and said: She is a fasting and persistent person. She will be your wife in Paradise (2). Musa bin Ali bin Rabah narrated, on the authority of his father, on the authority of Uqba bin Amer, who said: the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, divorced Hafsa once, and this reached Omar, so they threw dust on his head and said: Allah does not care about Omar and his daughter after her!

So Gabriel, peace be upon him, came down and said: Allah commands you to visit Hafsa bint Omar. Mercy for Omar. Reported by Abu al-Fadl ibn Abi al-Hasan al-Makhzoumi, on the authority of Abu Ya'la, who said: Abu Kurayb told us, Yunus ibn Bukayr told us, on the authority of al-A'mash, on the authority of Abu Salih, on the authority of Ibn Umar, who said: Omar entered upon Hafsa while she was crying. He said to her: What makes you cry? Perhaps the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, divorced you? He divorced you once and then took you back for my sake. If he divorces you again, I will never speak to you. Omar made a will to Hafsa after his death, and Hafsa bequeathed to her brother Abdullah bin Omar what Omar had bequeathed to her, and in charity, which she gave in charity with money that she left in the forest. She narrated on the authority of the Prophet ﷺ and her brother Abdullah and others narrated on her authority.

Reported by several transmitters, on the authority of Abu Issa, who said: Ishaq (1) bin Mansour, on the authority of Al-Muttalib bin Abi Wada'ah Al-Sahmi, who said: [What] (2) I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, in his rosary (3) sitting [until it was a year before his death, peace be upon him, for he used to pray in his rosary sitting] (4) He recites the surah and recites it until it is longer than it is longer (5). Reported by Abu al-Haram ibn Rayyan, on the authority of his sister Hafsa, who said: that when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, was silent, he would give the call to prayer for the morning prayer. He prayed two light rak'ahs before the prayer was performed (6).
