Biography of Hamza ibn Abd al-Muttalib

Hamza bin Abdul Muttalib bin Hashim bin Abd Manaf bin Qusay Abu Ya'la; according to another report, Abu Amara, a nickname for his two sons: Ya'la and Amara. His mother: Hala bint Wahib bin Abd Manaf bin Zahra, who is the cousin of Amna bint Wahb, the mother of the Prophet ﷺ. He is the brother of Safiyya bint Abd al-Muttalib, mother of al-Zubayr. He is the paternal uncle of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and his brother through breastfeeding. Thuwaybah, Abu Lahab's servant, breastfed them. She breastfed Abu Salamah bin Abdul Asad, and Hamza, may Allah bless him and his family, was pleased with him. Two years from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ; in another account, four years, and the first is more correct. He is the master of martyrs, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, became a brother between him and Zaid bin Haritha.

He converted to Islam in the second year of the mission, and the reason for his conversion to Islam was what Abu Ja`far Ubayd Allah ibn Ahmad told us with his chain of transmission to Yunus ibn Bukayr, on the authority of Muhammad ibn Ishaq, who said: Abu Jahl objected to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He insulted him and cursed him, and inflicted upon him the kind of shame he hated. Because of his religion and his weakening, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, did not speak to him. A female servant of Abdullah bin Jad'an al-Taymi, in her residence above Safa, heard that. Then he departed from him, so he went to a club for the Quraysh near the Kaaba, and sat with them. Hamza bin Abdul Muttalib, peace be upon him, quickly approached, drawing his bow, returning from his sniper rifle. And when he returned from his sniping, he would not return to his family until he circumambulated the Kaaba.

When he did that, he would not pass by a group of Quraysh except that he stopped and greeted them and spoke to them. He was the most powerful and most distrustful of Quraysh, and at that time he was a polytheist in the religion of his people. When he passed by the master, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, rose and returned to his house, she said to him: O Abu Amara, if you had seen what he had encountered Your nephew, Muhammad, from Abu al-Hakam, mentioned above, found him here, so he hurt him, insulted him, and told him what he disliked. He then left and Muhammad did not speak to him. So Hamzah endured the anger due to what Allah Almighty wanted to do with his dignity, so he left quickly, not standing on anyone, as he used to do, intending to circumambulate the Kaaba, preparing for Abu Jahl to attack him.

When he entered the mosque, he looked at him sitting among the people. He approached him until when he rose to his head, he raised the bow. He struck him with it with a severe and disgraceful blow, and men from the Quraysh, from the Banu Makhzum, rose up to Hamzah to support Abu Jahl. They said: We do not see you, Hamzah, unless you have arrived. Hamzah said: What is stopping me, when that has become clear to me? I bear witness that he is the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and that he who speaks the truth, by Allah I will not give up, so stop me if you are truthful. Abu Jahl said: Call Abu Amara, for by Allah I have caused an ugly insult to his nephew. Hamza agreed to convert to Islam. When Hamza converted to Islam, the Quraysh knew that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, had become proud and abstained, and that Hamza would prevent him, so they stopped eating some of what they were eating from him.

Then he migrated to Medina, witnessed Badr, and performed a great and famous calamity there. He killed Shaybah bin Rabi'ah bin Abd Shams in a duel, and was a partner in the killing of Utbah bin Rabi'ah. He and Ali, peace be upon him, participated in killing him. He also killed Tu'imah bin Adi bin Nawfal bin Abd Manaf, the brother of Al-Mu'tim bin Adi. Abu Al-Hasan Al-Madaini said: The first brigade that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ convened for Hamza bin Abdul Muttalib, peace be upon him, was sent by him in a company to Saif Al-Bahr from the land of Juhayna. Ibn Ishaq disagreed with him, saying: The first brigade he convened for Ubaidah bin Al-Harith bin Al-Muttalib. Hamzah used to teach war with an ostrich feather. He fought on the Battle of Badr in front of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, with two swords. Some of the captives of the infidels said: Who is the man marked with an ostrich feather? They said: Hamzah. He said: That is what he did to us.

He fought at Uhud and was killed there on Saturday, in the middle of Shawwal. Before he killed thirty-one people, one of the polytheists had been killed, including Sabaa Al-Khuza'i. Hamza said to him: Come to me, son of one who has had his genitals cut off. His mother was circumcised, so he killed him. Ibn Ishaq said: Hamzah was fighting with two swords that day, and someone said: Which lion is Hamzah? While he was like that, he tripped and fell on his back, revealing the armor on his stomach. Wahshi al-Habashi, a client of Jubayr bin Mut'im, stabbed him with a spear and killed him. The polytheists mutilated him, and all the dead Muslims except Hanzalah bin Abi Aamer, the monk. His father was with the polytheists, so they left him for his sake. He made the polytheists' women, Hind and her companions, pluck the noses and ears of the Muslims and cut their stomachs. Hind cut the stomach of Hamzah, peace be upon him, and took out his liver.

Her stomach was not touched by the fire." When the Prophet ﷺ witnessed it, his anger became intense for him. He said: "If I am victorious, I will be like seventy of them." Then Allah Almighty revealed: "And if you punish, then be punished with the same as what you were punished with, and if you are patient, that is better." For those who are patient, and be patient, and your patience is only with Allah. Abu Hurairah narrated that he said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ, stood over Hamzah. He was mutilated. He did not see a sight that was more painful to his heart than it, so he said: May Allah have mercy on you, that is, uncle, for you have been a relative of the family and a doer of good deeds.

Jabir narrated that he said: When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, saw Hamza killed, he cried. When he saw what he was like, he gasped and said: "If Safiyya had not been found, I would have left him until he was gathered from the stomachs of birds and wild beasts." Wasfiyya is the mother of Al-Zubayr and his sister. Muhammad bin Aqeel narrated, on the authority of Jabir, who said: When the Prophet ﷺ heard what was done to Hamza, he gasped. When he saw what was done to him, he was shocked. When the Prophet ﷺ returned to Medina, he heard mourning for the dead Ansar. He said: "But Hamza has no weeping." So the Ansar heard and ordered their women to mourn for Hamza before they killed them. They did so. Al-Waqidi said: They have not continued to mourn for Hamza until now. Ka'b bin Malik said, eulogizing Hamza, while another report states of Abdullah bin Rawahah: My eyes cried and it was right for her to cry...

And neither crying nor lamenting over the lion of Allah is of no use the morning after they said... to Hamza: That slain man. All the Muslims were afflicted... there and the Messenger was afflicted with him. O father, may the pillars be guided... and you are the Majestic of righteousness. May the peace of your Lord be upon you in paradise... mixed with bliss that will never fade away. O good Hashem, be patient... all your deeds are good and beautiful. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ is patient and generous... by the command of Allah he speaks when he says, "Except for the one who informs about me, Louya"... After today, Dailah is circulating, and before today they have not known or tasted... our events will be healed by them. You forgot to strike us with the heart of Badr... the day after the hasty death came to you. Abu Jahl was laid to rest dead... birds were hovering over him. Tajwal, Utbah, and his son all fell down...

and the greyness of a polished sword... O Hind, do not show gloating... for Hamza, your pride is low. O Hind, cry, do not be bored... for you are the miserable Hebrew ruler. Hamza was killed in the middle of Shawwal in the year three. He was fifty-seven years old, according to those who say: He was two years older than the Messenger of Allah ﷺ; some reports state instead: He was his age. Fifty-nine years, according to those who say: He was four years older than the Messenger of Allah ﷺ; according to another report, He was fifty-four years old, and this is said by the one who made the place of the Prophet ﷺ in Mecca ten years after the revelation, so the Prophet ﷺ would be fifty-two years old, and Hamzah would be fifty-four years old, so they do not disagree that Hamzah is older than the Prophet ﷺ.

Reported by He, on the authority of Ibn Ishaq, who said: A man of my companions told me, on the authority of a divider. He realized it, on the authority of Ibn Abbas, he said: "He prayed The Messenger of Allah ﷺ, peace and blessings of Allah be upon Hamza, said the "Allahu Akbar" seven times, then not a dead person was brought but he prayed over him with him, until seventy-two prayers were prayed over him. He told us Fatyan bin Mahmoud bin Sudan, Abu Nasr Ahmad bin Muhammad bin Abd Al-Qahir informed us, Abu Al-Hussein bin Al-Naqur informed us, Abu Al-Qasim Issa informed us Bin Ali bin Issa bin Al-Jarrah, Abu Al-Qasim Al-Baghawi told us, Muhammad bin Jafar Al-Warkani told us, Saeed bin Maysarah Al-Bakri told us, on the authority of Anas bin Malik said: "Whenever the Prophet ﷺ said the takbir for a funeral, he said the takbir for it four times. He said the takbeer for Hamza seventy times." Abu Ahmad Al-Askari said: Hamza was the first martyr.

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ informed us of Muhammad bin Muhammad bin Saraya bin Ali Al-Shahid and Mismar bin Abi Bakr bin Al-Uwais, and more than one person. They said By attributing their chain of transmission to Muhammad bin Ismail al-Ja'fi, the imam, Abdullah bin Yusuf told us, Al-Layth told us, Ibn Shihab told me, on the authority of Abdullah bin Ka'b Ibn Malik, on the authority of Jabir Ibn Abdullah, said: the Prophet ﷺ used to gather the two men who had been killed in one grave in one grave, saying: "Which of them is greater?" Taking the Qur'an?

"If one of them was pointed out, he would put it in the grave and say: 'I will bear witness over these on the Day of Resurrection.'" He ordered that they be buried in their blood, but they were not washed, and Hamza and his sister's son Abdullah bin Jahsh were buried in one grave, and Hamza was shrouded in A number, so if it was left on his head, his feet would be visible, and if he covered his feet with it, his head would be visible, so it would be placed on his head. He would be placed on His legs are a kind of adornment
