Samurah ibn Jundub

Sumrah ibn Jandab ibn Hilal ibn Harig ibn Murrah ibn Hazn ibn Amr ibn Jabir ibn Khasin, who was known as the one with two heads, son of Ayyub ibn Usma ibn Shimakh ibn Fazara ibn Dhabyan ibn Baghid ibn Rith ibn Ghatafan al-Fazari, known as Abu Sa'id, and it was said: Abu Abd al-Rahman, Abu Abd Allah, and Abu Sulaiman.

He resided in Basra, and his mother took him to Medina after the death of his father, where she married a man from the Ansar, named Mari ibn Sinan ibn Tha'laba. He had a slave in his house until he became a boy, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ would present the slaves of the Ansar every year. He passed by the boy, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ gave him permission to be freed. Then, he presented Sumrah after him, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ returned him. Sumrah said: I was given permission and then returned, and if I had fought him, I would have fought him. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'Free him and then fight him,' so Sumrah fought him, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ gave him permission to be freed, it was said: on the day of Uhud, and Allah knows best.

Al-Waqidi said: He was a client of the Ansar.

Abd Allah ibn Buraida reported from Sumrah ibn Jandab, that he said: I was a boy during the time of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and I used to memorize from him. What prevents me from speaking is that there are men here who are older than me. I prayed with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ over a woman who died in postpartum bleeding, and he stood up in the prayer in the middle of her.

He participated in a campaign with the Prophet ﷺ, except for one, and resided in Basra. Ziyad used to appoint him as governor over Basra when he went to Kufa, and he would appoint him as governor over Kufa when he went to Basra, and he would stay in each of them for six months. He was harsh on the Kharijites, and when he came upon one of them, he would kill him, and he would say: The most severe of my killings is under the vault of the sky, for they deny the Muslims and spill blood. The Kharijites and those who follow their ideology in their doctrine, they stab him and harm him.

And the people of Basra, including Ibn Sirin, al-Hasan, and other scholars, would praise him, Ibn Sirin said: There is a lot of knowledge in a letter from Sumrah to his sons.
