Biography of Shamun ibn Yazid

Shamaun ibn Yazid ibn Khunaqah Abu Rayhanah al-Azdi, and it was said: al-Ansari, and it was said: al-Qurashi, and it was said: he was a Qarizi, and he had a pledge in the Ansar, and the most correct is that he was Azdi, and it was said: his name was Shamaun, with the low 'ain, and it was said: with the glottal stop, and Ibn Yunus said: and this is the most correct to me.

He was a companion of the Prophet ﷺ, and he narrated hadiths from him, and he resided in the Levant in Jerusalem.

He was narrated from: Amr ibn Malik al-Jinbi, and Abu Rashidin Kriba ibn Abrahah, and Ubada ibn Nusayy, and Sharh ibn Hawshab, and Mujahid, and others.

He was among those who witnessed the conquest of Damascus, and he arrived in Egypt, and he camped in Mayyafariqin, from the land of al-Jazirah, then he returned to the Levant, and he was one of the righteous companions and their worshippers.

We were informed by Abu Yasir ibn Abu Yasir al-Daqqaq, with his chain of narration to Abdullah ibn Ahmad, he said: my father narrated to me, and he said: Zayd ibn al-Hubab narrated to me, and he said: Yahya ibn Ayyub narrated to me, from Ayash ibn Abbas al-Himyari, from Abu Husayn al-Hajari, from Abu Amir al-Hajari, from Abu Rayhanah, from the Prophet ﷺ that he disliked ten characteristics: the act of looking at the private parts of others, and the act of looking at the private parts of women, and the act of striking, and the act of being together, and the act of being together: a man with a man, and a woman with a woman, and there is no cloth between them, and the act of begging, and riding on donkeys, and wearing silk here and there, and wearing it below in the garments and in the shoulders, and wearing a ring except for one who has authority.

Abu Umar said: his daughter Rayhanah was a secret companion of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and he is famous by his kunyah.

It was narrated by the three (Ibn Manda, Abū Nuʿaym, Ibn ʿAbd al-Barr).
