Biography of Jamil ibn Basrah
Dhahabi: Jamil b. Basrah al-Ghafari, and it was said: Hamil b. Dhamma al-Ha' and Fath al-Mim, and this is more common, and it was said: Basrah b. Abu Basrah.
He resided in Egypt, and he had a house there.
Al-Maqbari reported from Abu Hurairah, from Hamil al-Ghafari, who said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'Do not set out on a journey except to three mosques: the mosque of Makkah, this mosque, and the mosque of Bayt al-Maqdis.'
Ibn Makula said: As for Hamil with Dhamma al-Ha' and Fath al-Mim, he is Abu Basrah al-Ghafari, Hamil b. Basrah.
Ali b. al-Madini said: And Malik said in the hadith of Zayd b. Aslam, from al-Maqbari, from Abu Hurairah, that he met Jamil, meaning: with the J, and he followed him, and ad-Durarudi, and Abu, and Ruwah b. al-Qasim said, from Zayd b. Aslam: Hamil with Ha' al-Mahmalah, and he followed him, and Sa'id b. Abu Maryam reported from Muhammad b. Ja'far, from Zayd, and Ibn al-Hadd said: Basrah b. Abu Basrah.
Ibn Makula said: And the correct one is Hamil, meaning: with Dhamma, and he said: They all agreed on this, and he is Hamil b. Basrah b. Waqqas b. Hajib b. Ghifar, and he reported from 'Amr b. al-'As, and Abu Hurairah, and Abu Tameem al-Jishani, and Tameem b. Far' al-Mahri, and Marthad b. 'Abd Allah al-Yazni, and others, and Ibn Makula's statement ended here.
This was narrated by Ibn Mandah, and Abu Na'im, and it was narrated by Abu 'Amr in Hamil with Ha' al-Mahmalah.
