Ramadan is the 9th month of the Islamic calendar. It is a month of fasting, prayer and spiritual reflection for Muslims worldwide. Fasting (sawm) is one of the five pillars of Islam.
Imsak is the time when the pre-dawn meal (Suhoor) must end. It is when fasting begins, a few minutes before the Fajr prayer call. It is recommended to finish eating before this time.
Iftar is the meal to break the fast at sunset, at the time of the Maghrib prayer call. It is recommended to break the fast with dates and water, following the prophetic tradition.
Fasting duration varies based on geographic location and season. In the US, it is generally between 11 and 17 hours depending on the month. The further north you are, the longer the days in summer.
Ramadan is the holiest month of the year for Muslims. During this blessed month, the faithful fast from dawn to sunset, abstaining from eating, drinking and everything that breaks the fast.
