What exactly is a Muslim name?

Let us first clear up a common misconception: strictly speaking, there is no such thing as a Muslim name. In Islam, every name is permitted by default, as long as it does not clash with the foundations of the religion or harm the person who bears it. You cannot name your son Iblis, nor give him a name that belongs to Allah alone, glorified and exalted. Conversely, a name of Arabic origin is not automatically a Muslim name. And for those who embrace Islam: changing one's first name has never been an obligation.

You can perfectly well be named Paul or Christine and be fully Muslim; there is no contradiction in that. If Arabs and Muslims have come to favour names rich in meaning and history, it is out of attachment to their religion, to their pious predecessors and to the prophets. It is in this spirit that we have gathered here the names most widely borne by Muslims around the world, be they old, modern or rarer, together with their meaning and origin.
