Definition of Rank / Row

As-saff: arranging things in a straight line, like people, trees and others.

The Almighty says: 'in rows' (As-Saffat 1). 'On couches arranged in rows' (At-Tur 20).

The ordered row symbolizes unity and discipline in prayer and battle.

Surah Al-Kahf : 48 Meccan

﴿وَعُرِضُوا۟ عَلَىٰ رَبِّكَ صَفًّۭا لَّقَدْ جِئْتُمُونَا كَمَا خَلَقْنَـٰكُمْ أَوَّلَ مَرَّةٍۭ ۚ بَلْ زَعَمْتُمْ أَلَّن نَّجْعَلَ لَكُم مَّوْعِدًۭا﴾

And they will be presented before your Lord in rows, [and He will say], "You have certainly come to Us just as We created you the first time. But you claimed that We would never make for you an appointment."

Surah Ta-Ha : 64 Meccan

﴿فَأَجْمِعُوا۟ كَيْدَكُمْ ثُمَّ ٱئْتُوا۟ صَفًّۭا ۚ وَقَدْ أَفْلَحَ ٱلْيَوْمَ مَنِ ٱسْتَعْلَىٰ﴾

So resolve upon your plan and then come [forward] in line. And he has succeeded today who overcomes."

Surah As-Saffat : 1 Meccan

﴿وَٱلصَّـٰٓفَّـٰتِ صَفًّۭا﴾

By those [angels] lined up in rows

Surah As-Saff : 4 Medinan

﴿إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ يُحِبُّ ٱلَّذِينَ يُقَـٰتِلُونَ فِى سَبِيلِهِۦ صَفًّۭا كَأَنَّهُم بُنْيَـٰنٌۭ مَّرْصُوصٌۭ﴾

Indeed, Allah loves those who fight in His cause in a row as though they are a [single] structure joined firmly.

Surah An-Naba : 38 Meccan

﴿يَوْمَ يَقُومُ ٱلرُّوحُ وَٱلْمَلَـٰٓئِكَةُ صَفًّۭا ۖ لَّا يَتَكَلَّمُونَ إِلَّا مَنْ أَذِنَ لَهُ ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنُ وَقَالَ صَوَابًۭا﴾

The Day that the Spirit and the angels will stand in rows, they will not speak except for one whom the Most Merciful permits, and he will say what is correct.

Surah Al-Fajr : 22 Meccan

﴿وَجَآءَ رَبُّكَ وَٱلْمَلَكُ صَفًّۭا صَفًّۭا﴾

And your Lord has come and the angels, rank upon rank,
