Main themes of the surah في سورة Saba

And thus, He is unable to extract it, informing that His book is contrary to that. Rather, it is such that whoever wants to glance at something, finds it immediately. So, He said: {mubeen}. It is also possible - and perhaps it is the best interpretation - when considering this with the verse of Yunus, that it is connected to 'mithqal', and the exception is disconnected. However, according to its structure, it is between two conflicting ideas. The meaning is that nothing from that is absent or far from Him, but it is preserved with the utmost preservation in a book from which nothing is intended to be revealed except that it is in the utmost clarity. Perhaps He indicated with the tool of connection that if there is solitude, it is with this characteristic, which is in the utmost distance from solitude. Then, He explained the reason for all of this as evidence of the truth of the oath with what the Ahzab concluded from the wisdom of presenting the trust, which no one with intellect can deny, even if it is minimal in its correctness. And it is not permissible in wisdom that He does otherwise, so He said: {liyajziya alladhina amanu}, meaning that He did not create the universe except for the sake of humans, so it is not permissible to leave them without reward: {wa amilu}, meaning doing {alssalihat} as a confirmation of their faith. And when the listener turned to knowing their reward, He mentioned it to glorify His affair, responding to the question, indicating it with what indicates the highness of His rank with the highness of the rank of His people: {olaika}

From {أتينا}, 'O' is a term used to address the most solid part of the earth, saying 'O mountains, respond' with the glorification and recitation of the Zabur and other remembrances of Allah {معه}, meaning every time it glorifies, this is an earthly sign of the most solid part of the earth, which is a function of the intelligent. Therefore, it is expressed in the command, indicating the greatness of power. Since the mountains are the thickest and heaviest part of the earth, and the meaning is 'let us call the mountains to respond with him', they hastened to answer our call, because they are among those who refused to bear the trust. Then, as a favor to that, the lightest and softest of creatures, to be a heavenly sign, that He does what He wills in the heaven, for if He were to kill the bird in the sky, it would fall, and there is no difference in that between the high and the low. So, He said: {والطير}, meaning 'we also called the birds', and they would respond with him, remembering Allah. Their response with the birds indicates their true remembrance, like the birds, to refute the assumption of those who think it is just an echo. The reading of Ya'qub with 'raf'' is in connection with the word 'jibal', and the reading of others is in connection with its place, or the 'waw' could mean 'with' or be considered an action related to what has been mentioned, like 'sakharna'. Wahb bin Munabbih said: 'He would say to the mountains: glorify Allah, and to the birds: respond', then he would take it while reciting the Zabur, with his beautiful voice, between that, so people would not see a more beautiful view, nor hear anything sweeter, just as the pebbles would glorify Allah in the hand of the Prophet, peace be upon him, and in the hand of Abu Bakr.

And when the Almighty completed what He willed of the signs of David, peace be upon him, and sealed them with iron, his son Solomon, peace be upon him, followed him in his role as a prophet, and began with his signs by mentioning what is among the reasons for the creation of iron by the Almighty. He said: {And to Solomon} - as a replacement for the horses that he had hamstrung for the sake of Allah - {the wind} - which was subjugated to him, according to the recitation of Shu'bah. The implied meaning, according to the recitation of the majority, is: We subjugated it to him while it was in a state of {its morning journey, a month's journey} - meaning it would carry him and his entire army in the morning, from dawn until noon, a distance that would normally take a month to travel. He would set out from Jerusalem in the morning and arrive in Persepolis by evening. {And its afternoon journey, a month's journey} - meaning its journey from noon until the end of the day, was also a month's journey. This is a heavenly sign indicating that just as the Almighty raised the carpet of Solomon, peace be upon him, along with his soldiers and their equipment, and then placed it back down, He is capable of placing whatever He wills from the heaven, thereby destroying whoever it falls upon. This is similar to how Allah subjugated the wind to the Prophet, peace be upon him, during the Battle of the Confederates, and it would knock down their tents, overturn their food, and strike their faces with stones and dust, without going beyond their army until Allah defeated them with it, just as it carried two individuals from among his Companions, may Allah be pleased with them.

They were a blind people, reproducing in ignorance, and were known as the Eternal Ones. God then sent a flood upon them, one thing after another, until a dam was built, said to be made of stone, and the water was so abundant that it filled the space between the mountains, sweeping away gardens and many people who could not escape. When those who were destined to drown did so, and those who were meant to be saved were saved, they dispersed and became fragmented to the point that the Arabs used them as a proverb, saying: 'They dispersed like the hands of Saba,' and the Aws and Khazraj tribes were among them. This occurred during the period between Jesus and our Prophet Muhammad, may God's peace be upon him. {And We substituted for them two gardens} means We replaced their gardens with {two gardens} that were the epitome of the opposite of their original gardens. The description of these gardens as {having fruit with bitter taste} is a form of mockery, as the word 'bitter' implies something that is unpalatable. The word {akl} means 'food' or 'fruit,' and the recitation of the word by the group with a nunation is a form of mockery, similar to the recitation by Abu Amr and Ya'qub. Since {khomt} is a type of plant that is eaten by both animals and humans, and is also avoided due to its thorns, God knows best what He intended by it, as it is a type of plant with edible fruit, and every thorny tree has fruit that is bitter or sour.

And when He informed them about this rightful reckoning and recompense after they had been in a state of great dominion, the enormity of His affair was a precursor to the action, indicating that it is of utmost importance to know about it. So He said: {that} refers to the great and high-ranking recompense in the matter of transformation {We recompensed them} with what is befitting Our greatness {for what they used to disbelieve} meaning, they covered the truth

He empowered him with complete empowerment, making him as one with true authority. And since this might imply a deficiency in knowledge or power, He said, indicating that He, glorified and exalted, willed the proliferation of this saved group and made most of them from his nation, saying: {And your Lord} - the One who has done good to you by humiliating Satan through your prophethood and depriving him of your nation - {is Guardian over all things}, whether they are obligated or not, {the Guardian}, meaning the Perfect Guardian, who encompasses all with His complete knowledge and comprehensive power. Thus, neither Satan nor anyone else can do anything except by His knowledge and permission. And since He, glorified and exalted, has established for Himself and His sacred essence the kingdom in the heavens and the earth and beyond, as you have seen, and has provided evidence for it that cannot be refuted by the objections you have heard, and the greatest purpose is the affirmation of the oneness of God, for it is the foundation upon which all good is based, He said: {Say}, O most knowledgeable of creation, by establishing evidence for those who have associated with God that which is clearly inferior and has the slightest grasp: {Invoke those whom you have claimed} - those you have deemed to be deities, just as you invoke God, especially in times of hardship. And the omission of the objects of 'claimed', which are their pronoun and deification, is a notification of the repugnance and odiousness of that, and what is mentioned in the verse is neither an action nor a standing.

And when they are deprived of having partners who can possess anything in the universe,

He said: Why have their necks and hands been singled out for this punishment? {Are they requited} namely with these chains {except for what they used to do}? That is, they were deeply rooted in it. {For they used to work} that is, in a manner of renewal and perpetuation, based on the knowledge they claimed to have founded. And this recompense - God knows best - is what necessitates their subjugation, humiliation, abasement, subdual, and affliction, just as they used to do with the believers and wish for them.

And since their doubt has two branches, one related to the essence and the other to the fruits, He began with the first because it is more important. So, He said, affirming the negation of those who think that their effort benefits them in provision in any way, and if not for the effort, it would not have been: {Say}, O most noble of creations to Allah, affirming in order to deny their claim that He expands in the world for those who do not accept His action: {Indeed, my Lord} - who has bestowed upon me the blessing of eternal happiness - {expands provision} - renewing it at every moment He wills with wealth, children, and other things - {for whom He wills and restricts} - tightening for those whom He wills among you, so that not all of those whom He expands upon are in accordance with what is right with Him and pleasing to Him, due to their differences in principles and their mutual disbelief. For Allah will inevitably punish some of them. Thus, their doubt is nullified, and it is established that He does what He wills as a test and trial. So, the expansion does not necessarily indicate pleasure, nor does the restriction indicate displeasure - as is known from His tradition in this world. {But most of the people} - those who have not risen above the level of desires and turmoil - {do not know}.

With this arrangement, on the Day of Gathering {لا يملك}, nothing of sovereignty {بعضكم لبعض}, among the near and the far, will be of any benefit. Since the discussion revolves around salvation and the context is intercession, benefit is presented first, saying: {نفعاً}, and the matter is completed by saying: {ولا ضراً}, to thoroughly sever all means that existed in the realm of obligation from the realm of recompense, where the intention is to fully manifest God's greatness in every way. Since the meaning is: On this day, we strip the creatures of what we had empowered them with in the world, in terms of benefiting and harming one another. And as everything else disappears, the Sacred One establishes what is befitting for Himself, saying compassionately regarding this decree: {ونقول}, in that state, without delay or neglect, {للذين ظلموا}, those who wronged by placing worship in other than its rightful place, especially those who denied the Resurrection when we introduce them to the Fire: {ذوقوا عذاب النار}. Since no description of the punishment was mentioned beforehand, nor any other, the one to whom it is addressed is more deserving of the description, as it is they who are being directly addressed with the rebuke. Thus, it is said: {التي كنتم}, by nature and disposition, {بها تذكبون}.

And they denied, meaning they did what they did, the fact being that those before them, such as the people of Noah and those after them, hastened to what these people hastened to, because denial was in their nature due to their hardness and arrogance. And they did not attain even a tenth of what We had given them, meaning a small fraction of the power, wealth, and capability that We had given to those before them in terms of physical strength, wealth, and intellectual abilities, as well as long lifespans and freedom from troubles. So they denied, due to their stubborn nature, and the pronoun is singular as is its right, and explicitly stated that the 'nun' in what was previously mentioned is for grandeur, not for plurality, in order to refute the stubbornness of the stubborn. Thus, it is said: My messengers. And since their persistence in rejecting the messengers was the cause of their destruction in astonishing ways, it became a proverbial example that will endure until the Day of Judgment. And the blessings that were bestowed upon them did not save them from the calamities, so it is fitting to say to the one who sees or hears: So how was My rejection, meaning in what it was for them of severity, which is like a blow, a denial of those who rejected My messengers, in order to be a warning to this person being addressed and an invitation to them to submit in fear of what befell them if they do what they did, whether the rejection is in its slightest form, as we have made it a cause of paralysis of the causes, or in its greatest form, as We sent down upon the people of Noah, peace be upon him, and those like them.

And We made it clear, and the most likely interpretation is that the Quran, which they said was a fabricated falsehood, {وأنّى} means 'how' and 'from where', {لهم التناوش} means 'for them to have a share' or 'to partake in something', and it seems that it is used to convey the idea of returning, so the meaning is that it is far-fetched for them, in the sense that it is only possible if they were to return to the worldly life, which is the realm of action, and how can they do that? This is a metaphor for their situation - in their quest for their faith to benefit them at that time, just as the faith of the believers benefited them in the worldly life - it is like the situation of someone who wants to take something from a high place, just as another person can easily take it from a lower level, without any difficulty. Abu 'Amr, Hamzah, al-Kasai, and Abu Bakr, on the authority of 'Asim, read it with a hamza, and it was said that the hamza is on the guaranteed waw, just like in the words 'wujuh' and 'waqt', making the pronunciation match the meaning. However, the correct interpretation is that it is not from this category, because the condition for the guaranteed waw to be hamzatized is that it must have a fixed damma, and that it must not be in the middle of a word, like in the word 'ta'awwad', and that it must not be in a verb like 'tanaul' and 'ta'awan'. It was narrated from Abu 'Amr that the meaning with the hamza is 'to take after', from the phrase 'na'ash', which means 'to abolish' or 'to delay', and 'niyash' is a movement that involves slowing down, and 'na'ash' also means 'to take'. Therefore, the hamza is original. The others read it with the waw, like the word 'tanaul', in terms of both pronunciation and meaning. Thus, the reading with the pure waw indicates that they want an easy taking, despite the distance of the thing being taken in terms of place.

[All] praise is [due] to Allah, to whom belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is in the earth, and to Him belongs [all] praise in the Hereafter. And He is the Wise, the Acquainted.

He knows what penetrates into the earth and what emerges from it and what descends from the heaven and what ascends therein. And He is the Merciful, the Forgiving.

But those who disbelieve say, "The Hour will not come to us." Say, "Yes, by my Lord, it will surely come to you. [Allah is] the Knower of the unseen." Not absent from Him is an atom's weight within the heavens or within the earth or [what is] smaller than that or greater, except that it is in a clear register -

That He may reward those who believe and do righteous deeds. Those will have forgiveness and noble provision.

But those who strive against Our verses [seeking] to cause failure - for them will be a painful punishment of foul nature.

And those who have been given knowledge see that what is revealed to you from your Lord is the truth, and it guides to the path of the Exalted in Might, the Praiseworthy.

But those who disbelieve say, "Shall we direct you to a man who will inform you [that] when you have disintegrated in complete disintegration, you will [then] be [recreated] in a new creation?

Has he invented about Allah a lie or is there in him madness?" Rather, they who do not believe in the Hereafter will be in the punishment and [are in] extreme error.

Then, do they not look at what is before them and what is behind them of the heaven and earth? If We should will, We could cause the earth to swallow them or [could] let fall upon them fragments from the sky. Indeed in that is a sign for every servant turning back [to Allah].

And We certainly gave David from Us bounty. [We said], "O mountains, repeat [Our] praises with him, and the birds [as well]." And We made pliable for him iron,

And to Solomon [We subjected] the wind - its morning [journey was that of] a month - and its afternoon [journey was that of] a month, and We made flow for him a spring of [liquid] copper. And among the jinn were those who worked for him by the permission of his Lord. And whoever deviated among them from Our command - We will make him taste of the punishment of the Blaze.

They made for him what he willed of elevated chambers, statues, bowls like reservoirs, and stationary kettles. [We said], "Work, O family of David, in gratitude." And few of My servants are grateful.

There was for [the tribe of] Saba' in their dwelling place a sign: two [fields of] gardens on the right and on the left. [They were told], "Eat from the provisions of your Lord and be grateful to Him. A good land [have you], and a forgiving Lord."

But they turned away [refusing], so We sent upon them the flood of the dam, and We replaced their two [fields of] gardens with gardens of bitter fruit, tamarisks and something of sparse lote trees.

[By] that We repaid them because they disbelieved. And do We [thus] repay except the ungrateful?

And We placed between them and the cities which We had blessed [many] visible cities. And We determined between them the [distances of] journey, [saying], "Travel between them by night or day in safety."

But [insolently] they said, "Our Lord, lengthen the distance between our journeys," and wronged themselves, so We made them narrations and dispersed them in total dispersion. Indeed in that are signs for everyone patient and grateful.

And Iblees had already confirmed through them his assumption, so they followed him, except for a party of believers.

And he had over them no authority except [it was decreed] that We might make evident who believes in the Hereafter from who is thereof in doubt. And your Lord, over all things, is Guardian.

Say, [O Muhammad], "Invoke those you claim [as deities] besides Allah." They do not possess an atom's weight [of ability] in the heavens or on the earth, and they do not have therein any partnership [with Him], nor is there for Him from among them any assistant.

And intercession does not benefit with Him except for one whom He permits. [And those wait] until, when terror is removed from their hearts, they will say [to one another], "What has your Lord said?" They will say, "The truth." And He is the Most High, the Grand.

Say, "Who provides for you from the heavens and the earth?" Say, "Allah. And indeed, we or you are either upon guidance or in clear error."

Say, "You will not be asked about what we committed, and we will not be asked about what you do."

Say, "Our Lord will bring us together; then He will judge between us in truth. And He is the Knowing Judge."

Say, "Show me those whom you have attached to Him as partners. No! Rather, He [alone] is Allah, the Exalted in Might, the Wise."

And We have not sent you except comprehensively to mankind as a bringer of good tidings and a warner. But most of the people do not know.

And they say, "When is this promise, if you should be truthful?"

Say, "For you is the appointment of a Day [when] you will not remain thereafter an hour, nor will you precede [it]."

And those who disbelieve say, "We will never believe in this Qur'an nor in that before it." But if you could see when the wrongdoers are made to stand before their Lord, refuting each other's words... Those who were oppressed will say to those who were arrogant, "If not for you, we would have been believers."

Those who were arrogant will say to those who were oppressed, "Did we avert you from guidance after it had come to you? Rather, you were criminals."

Those who were oppressed will say to those who were arrogant, "Rather, [it was your] conspiracy of night and day when you were ordering us to disbelieve in Allah and attribute to Him equals." But they will [all] confide regret when they see the punishment; and We will put shackles on the necks of those who disbelieved. Will they be recompensed except for what they used to do?

And We did not send into a city any warner except that its affluent said, "Indeed we, in that with which you were sent, are disbelievers."

Say, "Indeed, my Lord extends provision for whom He wills and restricts [it], but most of the people do not know."

And it is not your wealth or your children that bring you nearer to Us in position, but it is [by being] one who has believed and done righteousness. For them there will be the double reward for what they did, and they will be in the upper chambers [of Paradise], safe [and secure].

And the ones who strive against Our verses to cause [them] failure - those will be brought into the punishment [to remain].

And [mention] the Day when He will gather them all and then say to the angels, "Did these [people] used to worship you?"

They will say, "Exalted are You! You, [O Allah], are our benefactor not them. Rather, they used to worship the jinn; most of them were believers in them."

But today you do not hold for one another [the power of] benefit or harm, and We will say to those who wronged, "Taste the punishment of the Fire, which you used to deny."

And when our verses are recited to them as clear evidences, they say, "This is not but a man who wishes to avert you from that which your fathers were worshipping." And they say, "This is not except a lie invented." And those who disbelieve say of the truth when it has come to them, "This is not but obvious magic."

And We had not given them any scriptures which they could study, and We had not sent to them before you, [O Muhammad], any warner.

And those before them denied, and the people of Makkah have not attained a tenth of what We had given them. But the former peoples denied My messengers, so how [terrible] was My reproach.

Say, "I only advise you of one [thing] - that you stand for Allah, [seeking truth] in pairs and individually, and then give thought." There is not in your companion any madness. He is only a warner to you before a severe punishment.

Say, "The truth has come, and falsehood can neither begin [anything] nor repeat [it]."

And if you could see when they are terrified but there is no escape, and they will be seized from a place nearby.

And they will [then] say, "We believe in it!" But how for them will be the taking [of faith] from a place far away?

And they had already disbelieved in it before and would assault the unseen from a place far away.

And prevention will be placed between them and what they desire, as was done with their kind before. Indeed, they were in disquieting denial.
