Main themes of the surah في سورة Fussilat

And when He mentioned their condition in the world and alluded to their condition in the Hereafter, He followed it with a detailed explanation, saying: {ويوم} meaning, recall the days of the enemies of God in the world, in which He sent down His punishment upon them and replaced their actions with His own in their lands. And recall the day they will be gathered - this was the original intention, but He clarified what they were punished with, so it would encompass all those who were characterized by it, from the first to the last. So He said: {يحشر} meaning, they will be gathered in large numbers by the command of the Almighty, without any effort on our part - this is according to the recitation of the community, with the verb in the passive voice. And according to the recitation of Na'aq and Ya'qub, with the noon, in the active voice, it refers to the context of 'and we saved'. Both recitations convey a sense of grandeur, and so they are accompanied by the greatest name, which is greater than the manifestation of grandeur that the verb is derived from. This is because mentioning it increases the rebuke, scorn, and humiliation for their actions, and belittles their intellects for saying: {أعداء الله} meaning, the greatest King. The grammatical analysis is clear in both recitations. {إلى النار} the abode of the wretched. {فهم} due to their gathering, {يوزعون *} meaning, they will be driven and pushed, with the easiest of their actions being forced upon the first of them to the last. And whoever tries to turn away from them to the right or left, thinking they can hide due to their large numbers, will be forced back, and they will be driven with a driving of humiliation. And those who stray from them will be gathered back, for all of this is a type of punishment. And when He clarified their humiliation through being driven, He clarified their ultimate goal, saying: {حتى إذا} and He emphasized

The context leads to the estimation of my statement, 'So they turned away' - meaning these Arabs - and said, thus was the original, but he said, warning about the description that necessitated their turning away: {And those who disbelieve say}, meaning they conceal what their intellects have guided them to of the truth, {Do not listen} to anything from absolute listening {to this Quran}, specifically referring to it by indication, taking precautions against other ancient books like the Torah. Al-Qushayri said: Because it dominates the hearts and seizes the intellects, and everyone who listens to it is drawn to it. {And make noise} meaning divert, from 'lagi' - with a kasrah, it is diverted, and with a fat'hah - when speaking without benefit {in it}, making it an occasion for diversion by increasing vain talk, nonsense, and idle chatter, and making noise, hissing, and clapping, among other things, during its recitation, so that its listener falls into distraction and error. Al-Qushayri said: They said that, not knowing that whoever's heart is illuminated by faith, supported by understanding, and granted insight, and whose hearing is unveiled to the secrets of the unseen, is the one who listens and believes. And the one who is in the darkness of his ignorance, faith does not enter his heart, nor does he engage in sincere listening. {Perhaps you will overpower}, meaning so that your state may be like that of one who is hoped to overpower and achieve his desire, that someone may incline towards him or be silent.

And when they deserved this punishment, He hinted at it, affirming their denial, with His statement: {فلنذيقن} And He made a general statement, using a descriptive phrase, saying: {الذين كفروا} meaning these and others like them {عذاباً شديداً} a severe punishment in this world, through deprivation and the various forms of humiliation that follow, and in the Hereafter, through fire {ولنجزينهم} meaning, we will requite them for their deeds. And since He is able to do the greatest things, He is also able to do what is lesser, so He said: {أسوأ} meaning, the worst reward for the worst action {الذين كانوا} doing what came naturally to them, as if by instinct {يعملون} persisting in it. And after He had fully conveyed the warning of their punishment, He added to His greatness and excellence, out of kindness to those of His servants whom He wanted to guide, and to establish proof against those who refused, saying:

And if the least aspect of desire is withheld from {أنفسكم}, it is because you have been restrained from worldly desires. However, {ولكم} - for you, there will be in the Hereafter {ما تدعون} - that which you desire, yearn for, and ask for with the longing of your souls and the eagerness of your hearts. Since all of this is in relation to the small things they are given, it is noted by saying: {نزلاً} - a temporary provision, just as a guest is provided for upon arrival until more can be prepared. And since no one enters Paradise except through mercy, it is indicated by saying: {من غفور} - One who is Forgiving, with the attribute of erasing sins completely, without trace, to an extent that cannot be described, {رحيم} - Merciful, with a mercy that is pleasing to the Divine. Thus, the corrupt are led astray by Allah through evil companions from among jinn and humans who increase their corruption, while the righteous are facilitated by Allah through good companions from humans and angels who assist and endear them to all good deeds, keeping them away from and detesting all harm - and Allah takes care of the righteous.

Worshiping Him and acting upon it, even if at the same time as others, is a form of polytheism in the absolute sense. Whoever associates others with Him does not worship Him alone, and whoever does not worship Him alone does not worship Him at all, for He is the richest of the rich and only accepts what is pure. He is closer to His worshipers than anything else, and He will soon avenge Himself for your association with Him. The verse also hints at the encouragement to preserve humanity from prostrating to other than Him, elevating their status to not be prostrators to a created being after they were prostrated to. For He, the Exalted, commanded the angels, who are the most noble of His creation, to prostrate to Adam, and they did so, while the accursed Iblis refused, may he be cursed. What a great difference there is between the two stations.

With the mention, which is the only true mention, for there is no true mention other than it. When it came to them without any pause, it indicated their extreme stubbornness. And indeed, it is a book, meaning a compilation of all that is good, exalted, meaning there is no equal to it, so it overpowers every mention and no mention overpowers it, nor does anything come close to it. Every opponent is frustrated, and it never fails to subdue its adversaries.

And as a solace, and this is increased by the exclusivity of the addition, so He says: {من ربك} meaning the One who has done good to you by granting you success in righteous deeds and thwarting the evil one by repelling him from you for your comfort without harm to your religion, and by neglecting all until a known time, then postponing all until the Day of Great Judgment without extermination through punishment, just as We did with others of the nations {لقضي} meaning the decisive judgment has occurred {بينهم} between those who differ, by vindicating the oppressed from their oppressor now. And since He knows by this and other things that the Day of Resurrection has been decreed and made an appointment by One whose word does not change, it has become clear that it is inevitable and inescapable, while they argue about it. He says, affirming: {إنهم لفي شك} meaning they are surrounded by doubt {منه} meaning the judgment on the Day of Decision {مريب} meaning a place of doubt, which is suspicion and turmoil, to the point that they are unable to escape its circle at all.

Because it is also a subject for attributing to the original meaning absolutely, and because the negation of absolute injustice is explicitly stated in other verses. And since the previous verse included retribution for every major and minor, small and large, and exoneration from injustice, as the Almighty said {and judged between them with truth and they will not be wronged} {and every soul will be paid back for what it has done} {Al-Imran: 25} {and He is most knowing of what they do}. And it points to the threat of retribution on the Day of Judgment, because we see most of creation die without retribution, and it was their custom to ask about the knowledge of that day. And leaving retribution only occurs due to inability, and injustice only occurs due to ignorance, because it involves placing things in their improper places, like the act of one who walks in darkness. This indicates His transcendence above both, with complete knowledge that necessitates comprehensive power, in response to their question about the knowledge of the time when the Hour will occur, which was the reason for the revelation of this verse - as mentioned by Ibn Al-Jawzi - by saying, in a manner of explanation:

Thus, and with respect to the lightness and lack of stability, He said, using the tool of affirmation to indicate the predominance of His blessings in the world over His wrath, and to indicate the state of man when he is touched by a blessing from an expected direction, after explaining his state when he is suddenly touched by a blessing without expecting it, to emphasize the explanation of his ignorance. He made the circumstance of the blessing a circumstance of turning away, without fear of its removal, given the nearness of His promise of hardship: {وإذا أنعمنا} from what is ours, of greatness and benevolence {على الإنسان} i.e., the one who stands with himself, a blessing that is fitting for our greatness, so he is touched by good, and He did not express in this aspect what He expressed in the next, indicating that the one who turns away is sinful due to the mere act of turning away, not due to excess in it. So He said: {أعرض} i.e., he deviated from the straight path to us, from us, during the entire duration of the blessing - as the circumstance implies, for he did not restrict that blessing to gratitude after what he saw of our lawfulness. He cut off the fact that that blessing is pure good, both outwardly and inwardly, so he thinks it will continue, and perhaps it will be a trial and a test. {وناء} i.e., he went far, far away, to the point that he put a great barrier between us and him, given his state of being arrogant and self-admiring, and his pride and vanity, and his imagination of himself, as if he were speaking to someone who would turn away from you and become misguided and lost. And since the state of man when he is suddenly touched by hardship has been explained, He explained his state when he is touched by it

The intended meaning is gathering upon the religion whose foundation is faith, and whose pillar is prayer, and whose affair is mutual consultation that encompasses all people of the religion equally, just as they are equal in servitude to His law. The most beneficial things in this regard are spending and providing assistance with what one has, forgiving and pardoning the wrongdoer, and submitting to the truth even if it is difficult. This Book invites to all of this, being the spirit of the body of this religion, explaining the beautiful deeds and noble characteristics that it calls to, along the straight path. {Until they know that it is the truth}, {for He is encompassing all things}. This is clearly stated in what is mentioned in {Establish the religion and do not be divided therein except in love for the near relatives}, {Respond to your Lord}, {We guide with it whom We will of Our servants}, {and you surely guide to the straight path}, {and that to Allah all matters will return}. The naming of it as 'consultation' is a clear correspondence to this, due to what is contained within it, and also due to the disjointed letters, for they encompass the three exits: the throat, the lips, and the tongue.

Ha, Meem.

[This is] a revelation from the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful -

A Book whose verses have been detailed, an Arabic Qur'an for a people who know,

As a giver of good tidings and a warner; but most of them turn away, so they do not hear.

And they say, "Our hearts are within coverings from that to which you invite us, and in our ears is deafness, and between us and you is a partition, so work; indeed, we are working."

Say, O [Muhammad], "I am only a man like you to whom it has been revealed that your god is but one God; so take a straight course to Him and seek His forgiveness." And woe to those who associate others with Allah -

Those who do not give zakah, and in the Hereafter they are disbelievers.

Indeed, those who believe and do righteous deeds - for them is a reward uninterrupted.

Say, "Do you indeed disbelieve in He who created the earth in two days and attribute to Him equals? That is the Lord of the worlds."

And He placed on the earth firmly set mountains over its surface, and He blessed it and determined therein its [creatures'] sustenance in four days without distinction - for [the information] of those who ask.

Then He directed Himself to the heaven while it was smoke and said to it and to the earth, "Come [into being], willingly or by compulsion." They said, "We have come willingly."

And He completed them as seven heavens within two days and inspired in each heaven its command. And We adorned the nearest heaven with lamps and as protection. That is the determination of the Exalted in Might, the Knowing.

But if they turn away, then say, "I have warned you of a thunderbolt like the thunderbolt [that struck] 'Aad and Thamud.

[That occurred] when the messengers had come to them before them and after them, [saying], "Worship not except Allah." They said, "If our Lord had willed, He would have sent down the angels, so indeed we, in that with which you have been sent, are disbelievers."

As for 'Aad, they were arrogant upon the earth without right and said, "Who is greater than us in strength?" Did they not consider that Allah who created them was greater than them in strength? But they were rejecting Our signs.

So We sent upon them a screaming wind during days of misfortune to make them taste the punishment of disgrace in the worldly life; but the punishment of the Hereafter is more disgracing, and they will not be helped.

And as for Thamud, We guided them, but they preferred blindness over guidance, so the thunderbolt of humiliating punishment seized them for what they used to earn.

And We saved those who believed and used to fear Allah.

And [mention, O Muhammad], the Day when the enemies of Allah will be gathered to the Fire while they are [driven] assembled in rows,

Until, when they reach it, their hearing and their eyes and their skins will testify against them of what they used to do.

And they will say to their skins, "Why have you testified against us?" They will say, "We were made to speak by Allah, who has made everything speak; and He created you the first time, and to Him you are returned.

And you were not covering yourselves, lest your hearing testify against you or your sight or your skins, but you assumed that Allah does not know much of what you do.

And that was your assumption which you assumed about your Lord. It has brought you to ruin, and you have become among the losers."

So [even] if they are patient, the Fire is a residence for them; and if they ask to appease [Allah], they will not be of those who are allowed to appease.

And We appointed for them companions who made attractive to them what was before them and what was behind them [of sin], and the word has come into effect upon them among nations which had passed on before them of jinn and men. Indeed, they [all] were losers.

And those who disbelieve say, "Do not listen to this Qur'an and speak noisily during [the recitation of] it that perhaps you will overcome."

But We will surely cause those who disbelieve to taste a severe punishment, and We will surely recompense them for the worst of what they had been doing.

That is the recompense of the enemies of Allah - the Fire. For them therein is the home of eternity as recompense for what they, of Our verses, were rejecting.

And those who disbelieved will [then] say, "Our Lord, show us those who misled us of the jinn and men [so] we may put them under our feet that they will be among the lowest."

And not equal are the good deed and the bad. Repel [evil] by that [deed] which is better; and thereupon the one whom between you and him is enmity [will become] as though he was a devoted friend.

But none is granted it except those who are patient, and none is granted it except one having a great portion [of good].

And if there comes to you from Satan an evil suggestion, then seek refuge in Allah. Indeed, He is the Hearing, the Knowing.

And of His signs are the night and day and the sun and moon. Do not prostrate to the sun or to the moon, but prostate to Allah, who created them, if it should be Him that you worship.

But if they are arrogant - then those who are near your Lord exalt Him by night and by day, and they do not become weary.

And of His signs is that you see the earth stilled, but when We send down upon it rain, it quivers and grows. Indeed, He who has given it life is the Giver of Life to the dead. Indeed, He is over all things competent.

Indeed, those who inject deviation into Our verses are not concealed from Us. So, is he who is cast into the Fire better or he who comes secure on the Day of Resurrection? Do whatever you will; indeed, He is Seeing of what you do.

Indeed, those who disbelieve in the message after it has come to them... And indeed, it is a mighty Book.

Falsehood cannot approach it from before it or from behind it; [it is] a revelation from a [Lord who is] Wise and Praiseworthy.

Nothing is said to you, [O Muhammad], except what was already said to the messengers before you. Indeed, your Lord is a possessor of forgiveness and a possessor of painful penalty.

And if We had made it a non-Arabic Qur'an, they would have said, "Why are its verses not explained in detail [in our language]? Is it a foreign [recitation] and an Arab [messenger]?" Say, "It is, for those who believe, a guidance and cure." And those who do not believe - in their ears is deafness, and it is upon them blindness. Those are being called from a distant place.

And We had already given Moses the Scripture, but it came under disagreement. And if not for a word that preceded from your Lord, it would have been concluded between them. And indeed they are, concerning the Qur'an, in disquieting doubt.

Whoever does righteousness - it is for his [own] soul; and whoever does evil [does so] against it. And your Lord is not ever unjust to [His] servants.

To him [alone] is attributed knowledge of the Hour. And fruits emerge not from their coverings nor does a female conceive or give birth except with His knowledge. And the Day He will call to them, "Where are My 'partners'?" they will say, "We announce to You that there is [no longer] among us any witness [to that]."

And lost from them will be those they were invoking before, and they will be certain that they have no place of escape.

Man is not weary of supplication for good [things], but if evil touches him, he is hopeless and despairing.

And if We let him taste mercy from Us after an adversity which has touched him, he will surely say, "This is [due] to me, and I do not think the Hour will occur; and [even] if I should be returned to my Lord, indeed, for me there will be with Him the best." But We will surely inform those who disbelieved about what they did, and We will surely make them taste a massive punishment.

And when We bestow favor upon man, he turns away and distances himself; but when evil touches him, then he is full of extensive supplication.

Say, "Have you considered: if the Qur'an is from Allah and you disbelieved in it, who would be more astray than one who is in extreme dissension?"

We will show them Our signs in the horizons and within themselves until it becomes clear to them that it is the truth. But is it not sufficient concerning your Lord that He is, over all things, a Witness?

Unquestionably, they are in doubt about the meeting with their Lord. Unquestionably He is, of all things, encompassing.
