Main themes of the surah في سورة Al-Ahqaf

He, glorified and exalted, censured and reproached them for worshiping what neither harms nor benefits, saying {Have you considered what you invoke besides Allah} - up to His statement: {And they were, with regard to their worship, disbelievers}. Then, He mentioned their obstinacy in listening to the verses, saying: {And when Our verses are recited to them as clear evidence}. The discourse then continued and was intertwined until the end of the surah. And when He, glorified, established the fundamental principle that indicates monotheism and proves justice and sanctity through resurrection for judgment, and they used to say that they were the most intelligent people, and the intelligent person would not feel secure from the dangers of warning unless he prepared for it, and he would not be able to ward off the threatened punishment except through someone who is his equal or superior, whether through partnership or otherwise, and they used to invoke their idols as partners, He built upon this fundamental principle its branches. He began by invalidating their argument, saying, glorified and exalted, commanding him, may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him, to alert them to their foolishness, in that they turned away from what could harm them without taking any precautions, indicating the lack of divinity of what they called gods due to the absence of evidence for their divinity from reason or revelation, for the position of divinity cannot be established for one who lacks the honor that is known to be associated with it.

You accuse me of lying, but I only intend to advise you. The One I am attributing this lie to will punish me for it and will not leave me alone. This is the meaning of the statement: {فلا تملكون} - O you who are being advised, at any time, in any way {لي من الله} - the Great, the Mighty, the Wise King {شيئاً} - anything that would prevent His vengeance upon me. For the King does not leave anyone who lies to Him unpunished, so how can I be punished for intentionally lying to Him about significant matters, morning and evening? Who will bear the burden of my lies when the intended purpose does not benefit me, and the One I am lying about does not leave me alone? Then, the statement explains the necessity of vengeance by saying: {هو أعلم} - He is more knowledgeable than you and everyone {بما تفيضون فيه} - about the lies you attribute to me. If He were as you claim, He would not have supported me, let alone aided and assisted me. This statement contains a warning to them, consolation for him, and relief from their accusations. Since mere assertion is not sufficient to prove the truth, and although it may seem evident, it is necessary to have definitive proof and clear evidence to claim truthfulness. The testimony of the King, who is the subject of the conversation, is the greatest evidence, for He is the most knowledgeable, and testimony is based on knowledge. Therefore, the statement produces a definitive conclusion with the phrase: {كفى} and emphasizes the action by using the preposition 'by' to confirm the action and deny metaphor, saying: {به شهيداً}

Whoever affirms the oneness of God has indeed believed, and whoever associates partners with Him has disbelieved. God has revealed this in the Torah, the Gospel, and all their scriptures. Their books have concurred with it, their messengers have unanimously agreed upon it, and their prophets, may peace be upon them, have consistently called to it and commanded it. Then, having borne witness to this, He said: {fāaman} - that is, this one who has borne witness to this testimony by this Quran when he saw it confirming what was mentioned and knew it to be the Book that their scriptures had foretold. He was guided to put things in their proper place, so he did, and did not become arrogant. And when those who carried the burden of proof after these evidences persisted in their unbelief due to pride and haughtiness, He said: {waastakbartum} - that is, you exhibited pride by turning away from it, seeking leadership, pride, and superiority. Thus, after the testimony of this witness, you were defiant without any justifiable doubt, leading you astray and causing you to disbelieve. You misplaced things, and the door to guidance was closed to you. And since they claimed to be the most guided and just of people, while rejecting the testimony of the Creator and the creation was an act of great injustice, making them misguided with full knowledge, God said, starting anew and indicating that the judgment is: Have you not, by your failure to believe after having knowledge, committed a great injustice by placing disbelief in the position of belief, thus going astray and intentionally abandoning the path that leads to guidance? {inna Allāh} - that is, the King

From ten to thirty years, one comes in the form of a collective, as if you have no equal, or a collective with no singular form from its word, or a singular with a kasrah (a diacritic mark indicating a broken plural), even though the pattern fa'lah does not collect on the pattern af'al, or shad like kalb (dog) and aklab (dogs), or shad like dhi'b (wolf) and adh'ab (wolves), and they are not heard but rather a matter of analogy - as has been mentioned, and it has been previously discussed in the surah of Yusuf what is of great benefit here. At-Tabarani narrated in the biography of Ibn Ahmad bin Lubayd al-Bayruti from Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with them, that he said: 'The age of ashad is thirty-three years, and it is the age at which 'Isa ibn Maryam was raised.' Al-Haythami said: 'In it is Sadqah bin Yazid, whom Abu Zur'ah and Abu Hatim trusted, but Ahmad and a group weakened him, and the rest of its narrators are trustworthy.' Az-Zamakhshari said: 'It is the beginning of ashad and its end is forty.' And since the days of childhood and youth, even though they are the prime of a human's life and the times of his delight and the gathering of his strength and rest, in which the secret of his life appears to him in most cases, due to the dominance of the evil souls over him with bestial and savage tendencies, because of the consequences of desires and impulses they carry upon him.

And since this discourse has reached its conclusion, with excellent organization, and has encompassed these two categories as a compelling example for the disbelievers and believers of the Arabs, the first being for the believers who follow the religion of Ibrahim, peace be upon him, which was brought by the greatest of prophets, Muhammad, peace be upon him, and the second for the disbelievers who reject the greatest of their ancestors, Ibrahim, peace be upon him, whom they know through tradition inherited from their fathers, and through the miraculous Quran, as if they heard it from their Creator, affirming the oneness of Allah and warning of His punishment, and since He, glorified be He, had begun the discussion about them with what was mentioned regarding their disbelief in the Bestowers of blessings and their deserving of both evils, the humiliation of this world and the punishment of the Hereafter, He informed them of what their denial of their Lord's promise and disobedience to their parents, in reality or in teaching, produced, saying: {أولئك}, meaning those who are distant from reason and all goodness, {الذين حق}, meaning it is confirmed and obligatory. And since this is a threat, He indicated it with the instrument of superiority, saying: {عليهم القول}, meaning the complete and perfect word in its category, that they are the lowest of the low, which contradicts the claim of those who said that it was revealed about Abdur-Rahman ibn Abu Bakr, may Allah be pleased with them, for he became a Muslim and one of the senior Companions, may Allah be pleased with them all, and Paradise became his rightful due.

And when He divided them in their deeds, He gathered them in justice and grace, saying: {ولكل} - that is, for every one of the two groups, the blessed and the wretched, from the two species: the jinn

By the command of its Lord, meaning the One who created it, nurtured it, and perfected it, exacting revenge upon its enemies. And when it was mentioned with this grand remembrance, and the estimation was that it came to them and destroyed them, leaving none of them behind, the statement 'so it became morning' was added as an exaggeration. 'So it became morning' - and when the listener's attention was intensely focused on how they became morning, it was said, translating their annihilation: 'You see nothing' - that is, O perceiver. And when the awe of the heart and the terror of the soul were magnified, the Almighty said: 'except their dwellings' - that is, as a reward for their wickedness. Thus, the expression was suited to the meaning, and it was understood that the intended meaning of 'morning' is the absolute existence, but it was expressed in this way because the calamity in it is greater. And it was understood that none of the deniers remained, neither their homes nor their fiery ovens, and this is a metaphor for the comprehensive destruction that befell them, whether the sand buried them or they were laid out on the surface of the earth, as in the other verse: {You see the people therein fallen as if they were hollow trunks of palm trees} [{Haqqah: 7}]. And it was narrated that when Hud, peace be upon him, sensed the wind, he withdrew with those who believed with him to a sanctuary, and the wind leaned against the unbelievers, the Ahqaf, which was their gathering place when they spoke and the location of their expanses when they played. So they were under it for seven nights and eight days, then it uncovered them, lifted them, and cast them into the sea. Similarly, it destroyed their livestock and everything that had a soul, and it did not afflict Hud.

When they used to deny, meaning they would repeatedly deny over time, the signs of Allah, meaning the rejection of the evident signs of the Great King, and what surrounded them, meaning what encompassed them in terms of destruction and greatness, was a matter they could not comprehend. This was a punishment that they used to mock, meaning they found it to be a persistent and ongoing reality, a reality that was sought by one who was in love with it. And when the intended goal of informing about their destruction, given their great ability, was achieved, so that those who heard about their affair might take heed, He then mentioned those who followed them and shared in their denial, and thus shared in their destruction. He said, repeating it to frighten them and indicating the encompassing nature of His power and knowledge: {And We have certainly destroyed} with the greatness and encompassing power that We possess {what surrounds you}, meaning, O people of Mecca, {of the towns}, such as the people of Al-Hijr, Saba, Midian, Al-Ayka, the people of Lot, Pharaoh, the companions of Ar-Rass, Thamud, and others who are a lesson. And since the destruction that is being warned about was mentioned first, the listener looks to ask about their condition in the signs, so He said

With gentleness, I understand their statement to mean that if they do not respond, He will exact revenge upon them with a painful punishment. He followed this with an even more severe warning, saying: {And whoever does not respond to the Caller of Allah}, meaning the great Angel who encompasses all things, for whom there is no equal and whose wrath no one can withstand. The call of this Prophet, may God's peace and blessings be upon him, encompasses all of creation. Since the Book and the Sunnah, as I have previously mentioned in the chapters of Al-An'am and Al-Furqan, indicate the universality of the message, and one who refuses to respond to a message that is universal is a disobedient person deserving of punishment, He described His punishment in a way that indicates its inevitability, saying: {He is not incapable} of what He decrees against him {on earth}, for He is a sign within it, and He is encompassed by His own dominion, kingdom, and power. {And he has no protector besides Him}, meaning God, who is the only one capable of protecting, for no one can protect except Him. {No allies} will be able to do for him what a close relative would do for their kin, such as defending him, interceding on his behalf, ransoming him, or taking his place. Since salvation is impossible for him from every angle, and this does not differ whether the disobedient person is one or many, the statement of God, the Exalted, produces an expression in the plural form.

And when the Almighty and Exalted One completed what was required by the purpose of this surah, regarding the fundamentals and branches of religion, and the warning against His might by mentioning some of His examples, and concluded with the misguidance of those who did not respond to the caller, He drew attention to the fact that the clearest evidence of His encompassing majesty and beauty, and His power over the specified term for which He created creation, is what was clarified at the beginning of the surah, from the creation of the heavens and what is in them, and the signs that are apparent to the ear and eye. So, He said, mournfully for them due to their misguidance from responding to the caller, and denying and rebuking them, guiding them with affection towards what was not mentioned, until the statement: {ألم ير}

Ha, Meem.

The revelation of the Book is from Allah, the Exalted in Might, the Wise.

We did not create the heavens and earth and what is between them except in truth and [for] a specified term. But those who disbelieve, from that of which they are warned, are turning away.

Say, [O Muhammad], "Have you considered that which you invoke besides Allah? Show me what they have created of the earth; or did they have partnership in [creation of] the heavens? Bring me a scripture [revealed] before this or a [remaining] trace of knowledge, if you should be truthful."

And who is more astray than he who invokes besides Allah those who will not respond to him until the Day of Resurrection, and they, of their invocation, are unaware.

And when the people are gathered [that Day], they [who were invoked] will be enemies to them, and they will be deniers of their worship.

And when Our verses are recited to them as clear evidences, those who disbelieve say of the truth when it has come to them, "This is obvious magic."

Or do they say, "He has invented it?" Say, "If I have invented it, you will not possess for me [the power of protection] from Allah at all. He is most knowing of that in which you are involved. Sufficient is He as Witness between me and you, and He is the Forgiving the Merciful."

Say, "I am not something original among the messengers, nor do I know what will be done with me or with you. I only follow that which is revealed to me, and I am not but a clear warner."

Say, "Have you considered: if the Qur'an was from Allah, and you disbelieved in it while a witness from the Children of Israel has testified to something similar and believed while you were arrogant...?" Indeed, Allah does not guide the wrongdoing people.

And those who disbelieve say of those who believe, "If it had [truly] been good, they would not have preceded us to it." And when they are not guided by it, they will say, "This is an ancient falsehood."

And before it was the scripture of Moses to lead and as a mercy. And this is a confirming Book in an Arabic tongue to warn those who have wronged and as good tidings to the doers of good.

Indeed, those who have said, "Our Lord is Allah," and then remained on a right course - there will be no fear concerning them, nor will they grieve.

Those are the companions of Paradise, abiding eternally therein as reward for what they used to do.

And We have enjoined upon man, to his parents, good treatment. His mother carried him with hardship and gave birth to him with hardship, and his gestation and weaning [period] is thirty months. [He grows] until, when he reaches maturity and reaches [the age of] forty years, he says, "My Lord, enable me to be grateful for Your favor which You have bestowed upon me and upon my parents and to work righteousness of which You will approve and make righteous for me my offspring. Indeed, I have repented to You, and indeed, I am of the Muslims."

Those are the ones from whom We will accept the best of what they did and overlook their misdeeds, [their being] among the companions of Paradise. [That is] the promise of truth which they had been promised.

But one who says to his parents, "Uff to you; do you promise me that I will be brought forth [from the earth] when generations before me have already passed on [into oblivion]?" while they call to Allah for help [and to their son], "Woe to you! Believe! Indeed, the promise of Allah is truth." But he says, "This is not but legends of the former people" -

Those are the ones upon whom the word has come into effect, [who will be] among nations which had passed on before them of jinn and men. Indeed, they [all] were losers.

And for all there are degrees [of reward and punishment] for what they have done, and [it is] so that He may fully compensate them for their deeds, and they will not be wronged.

And the Day those who disbelieved are exposed to the Fire [it will be said], "You exhausted your pleasures during your worldly life and enjoyed them, so this Day you will be awarded the punishment of [extreme] humiliation because you were arrogant upon the earth without right and because you were defiantly disobedient."

Destroying everything by command of its Lord. And they became so that nothing was seen [of them] except their dwellings. Thus do We recompense the criminal people.

And We had certainly established them in such as We have not established you, and We made for them hearing and vision and hearts. But their hearing and vision and hearts availed them not from anything [of the punishment] when they were [continually] rejecting the signs of Allah; and they were enveloped by what they used to ridicule.

And We have already destroyed what surrounds you of [those] cities, and We have diversified the signs [or verses] that perhaps they might return [from disbelief].

Then why did those they took besides Allah as deities by which to approach [Him] not aid them? But they had strayed from them. And that was their falsehood and what they were inventing.

And [mention, O Muhammad], when We directed to you a few of the jinn, listening to the Qur'an. And when they attended it, they said, "Listen quietly." And when it was concluded, they went back to their people as warners.

They said, "O our people, indeed we have heard a [recited] Book revealed after Moses confirming what was before it which guides to the truth and to a straight path.

O our people, respond to the Messenger of Allah and believe in him; Allah will forgive for you your sins and protect you from a painful punishment.

But he who does not respond to the Caller of Allah will not cause failure [to Him] upon earth, and he will not have besides Him any protectors. Those are in manifest error."

Do they not see that Allah, who created the heavens and earth and did not fail in their creation, is able to give life to the dead? Yes. Indeed, He is over all things competent.

And the Day those who disbelieved are exposed to the Fire [it will be said], "Is this not the truth?" They will say, "Yes, by our Lord." He will say, "Then taste the punishment because you used to disbelieve."

So be patient, [O Muhammad], as were those of determination among the messengers and do not be impatient for them. It will be - on the Day they see that which they are promised - as though they had not remained [in the world] except an hour of a day. [This is] notification. And will [any] be destroyed except the defiantly disobedient people?
