Biography of Ahmad ibn Hafs
d ': Ahmad ibn Hafs ibn al-Mughirah ibn 'Abd Allāh ibn 'Umar ibn Mukhzūm, Abū 'Amr al-Makhzūmī, and he is the paternal cousin of Khālid ibn al-Walīd, and Abū Jahal ibn Hishām, and Khaythamah bint Hāshim ibn al-Mughīrah, the mother of 'Umar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb. He was mentioned by Abū 'Abd al-Raḥmān al-Nasā'ī, on the authority of Ibrāhīm ibn Ya'qūb al-Jawzajānī, that he asked Abū Hishām al-Makhzūmī, who was a scholar of the genealogies of Banī Mukhzūm, about the name of Abū 'Amr ibn Hafs, who said: Ahmad, and his mother was Durrah bint Khuzā'ī ibn al-Ḥārith ibn Ḥuwairith al-Thaqafī.
'Alī ibn Rabāḥ reported, on the authority of Nāshirah ibn Samī al-Yaznī, who said: I heard 'Umar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb say on the Day of al-Jābiyah while he was delivering a sermon: I disclaim responsibility to you regarding Khālid ibn al-Walīd; I ordered him to detain this wealth for the Muhājirūn, but he gave it to one with might, and one with nobility, and one with a tongue, then I took it back, and I appointed Abū 'Ubaydah ibn al-Jarrāḥ, then Abū 'Amr ibn Hafs stood up, and said: By Allāh, you have not been just, O 'Umar; you have deposed a governor appointed by the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ, and unsheathed a sword unsheathed by the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ, and lowered a banner raised by the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ; and you have cut off a tie of kinship and envied your cousin, whereupon 'Umar said: You are a young man of close kinship and one with a grudge against your cousin.
This was reported by Ibn Mandah and Abū Nu'aym, and this Abū Hafs is the husband of Fāṭimah bint Qays; his mention will also be made later.
