Biography of Arata ibn al-Mundhir
Abū Mūsá reported to us by way of permission, who said: Abdān al-Marwazī said: Arṭātah ibn al-Mundhir al-Sakūnī was a Companion, and he said: Hishām ibn ʿAmmār reported to us, Maslamah ibn ʿAlī reported to us, Naṣr ibn ʿAlqamah reported to us, from his brother, from Ibn ʿĀʾidh, from Arṭātah ibn al-Mundhir al-Sakūnī, who said: I killed ninety-nine polytheists with the Messenger of God ﷺ, and I do not love that I had killed their like, and that I had uncovered the veil of a Muslim.
Abdān said: Muḥammad ibn ʿAlī ibn Rāfiʿ said: The correct one is Laqīṭ ibn Arṭātah al-Sakūnī, and there is no significance to Arṭātah ibn al-Mundhir, Abū Mūsá said: and this man’s statement is correct, he said: it indicates what Abū Ghālib al-Kushūdī reported to us, Abū Bakr ibn Rabdhah reported to us, al-Ṭabarānī reported to us, Aḥmad ibn al-Muʿallā al-Dimashqī and al-Ḥusayn ibn Isḥāq al-Tustarī reported to us, they said: Hishām ibn ʿAmmār reported to us, Maslamah ibn ʿAlī reported to us, Naṣr ibn ʿAlqamah reported to us, from his brother, meaning: Maḥfūẓ, from Ibn ʿĀʾidh and his name is ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Laqīṭ ibn Arṭātah al-Sakūnī, that a man said to him: Our neighbor drinks wine, and commits indecency, so raise his matter to the Sultan, and he said to him: I killed ninety-nine, and mentioned the like of it.
Abū Mūsá said: And I do not know how the path fell to the first one, because Abdān already narrated it in its sequence, from Hishām ibn ʿAmmār as well, and he said in it: Laqīṭ ibn Arṭātah, and perhaps he made a mistake in it once, and Arṭātah narrates from the Tābiʿūn and their followers, and among them are trustworthy Shāmī scholars who did not meet any of the Companions, so how with the Prophet ﷺ and Maslamah is known as Ibn ʿUlī with a dammah on the ʿayn, and he disliked to diminish his father’s name.
Abū Mūsá extracted it.
