Biography of Athina bint al-Harith
Adhīnah ibn al-Hārith ibn Ya'mur, also known as al-Shudākh ibn 'Awf ibn Ka'b ibn Mālik ibn Layth ibn Bakr ibn 'Abd Manāt ibn Kanānah ibn Khużaymah al-Kanānī al-Laythī Abū 'Abd al-Raḥmān.
This lineage was mentioned by Ibn Mandah and Abū Nu'aym, based on al-Bukhārī.
Ibn 'Abd al-Barr said: Adhīnah al-'Abdī, the father of 'Abd al-Raḥmān, is a disputed figure, with some saying: Adhīnah ibn Muslim al-'Abdī from 'Abd al-Qays, while others said: Adhīnah ibn al-Hārith ibn Ya'mur, and traced his lineage back to Kanānah as mentioned earlier, and he said: The first account is more accurate, and he said: Some people have incorrectly referred to him as al-Shanī.
Abū Dā'ūd al-Ṭayālisī reported in his Musnad, from Salam Abū al-Aḥwaṣ, from Abū Isḥāq, from 'Abd al-Raḥmān ibn Adhīnah, that the Prophet ﷺ said: If someone swears an oath and then sees something better than it, they should do the better thing and expiate for their oath.
This narration was not reported by anyone else from Abū Isḥāq except Salam ibn Sulaym.
It was reported by all three.
I said: The statement of those who said he was from 'Abd al-Qays is more accurate, and this is supported by what Ibn Ḥabīb reported from Ibn al-Kalbī, that he was Adhīnah ibn Muslim al-'Abdī, and Abū Aḥmad al-'Askarī mentioned him in 'Abd al-Qays, saying: Adhīnah al-'Abdī Abū 'Abd al-Raḥmān ibn Adhīnah, who served as the judge of Baṣrah under al-Ḥajjāj, was the son of Salamah ibn al-Ḥārith ibn Khālid ibn 'Ā'id ibn Sa'd ibn Thalabah ibn Ghanm ibn Mālik ibn Bahshah, and Adhīnah was the leader of 'Abd al-Qays during the time of 'Uthmān.
