Biography of Ibrahim Abu Rafi'
d ': IBRĀHĪM ABŪ RĀFIʿ, the client of the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ. Ibn Maʿīn said: his name is Ibrāhīm, but it was also said: Hirmaz. ʿAlī ibn al-Madīnī and Muṣʿab said, his name is Aslam: ʿAlī also said: and it was also said: Hirmaz, and it was also said: Thābit. He was a Copt, and was the slave of al-ʿAbbās ﵁, who gave him to the Prophet ﷺ. He became Muslim in Makkah with Umm al-Faḍl, and they kept their Islam secret. He witnessed the battles of Uḥud and al-Khandaq. He was in charge of the Prophet's baggage. When the Prophet ﷺ received news of al-ʿAbbās's Islam, he freed him and married him to his client Salmā. He witnessed the conquest of Egypt and died in the year 40 AH. This was stated by Ibn Makūlā, but other accounts also exist.
Abū al-Faraj Yaḥyā ibn Maḥmūd ibn Saʿd al-Aṣfahānī al-Thaqafī informed us, by way of ijāzah, with his isnād: from Abū Bakr Aḥmad ibn ʿAmr ibn Abī ʿĀṣim al-Ḍaḥḥāk ibn Mukhallad, who said: Ḥudbah informed us, who said: Ḥammād ibn Salamah informed us, from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Abī Rāfiʿ, from his aunt Salmā, from Abī Rāfiʿ, that the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ performed ṭawāf with his wives collectively, then performed ghusl with each of them separately, I said: O Messenger of Allāh, why not make it one ghusl? He said: This is purer and sweeter. Abū Rāfiʿ died during the caliphate of ʿUthmān, but it was also said: during the caliphate of ʿAlī, which is the correct account.
