Biography of Imru' al-Qais ibn Abis
'Amr al-Qays ibn 'Abas ibn al-Mundhir ibn 'Amr al-Qays ibn as-Samt ibn 'Amr ibn Mu'awiya ibn al-Harith al-Akbar ibn Mu'awiya ibn Thawr ibn Maridh ibn Mu'awiya ibn al-Harith ibn Kindah al-Kandi visited the Prophet ﷺ and accepted Islam. He was steadfast in his faith and did not apostatize, unlike others from Kindah. He was a poet who settled in Kufa, and it was he who argued with al-Hadhrami before the Prophet ﷺ. He said to al-Hadhrami: 'I will expose your deceit.'
He said: O Messenger of Allah, if one takes an oath on a false promise, the Prophet ﷺ said: 'He who takes an oath on a false promise to me will be deprived of the wealth he has, and Allah will be angry with him.'
'Amr al-Qays said: O Messenger of Allah, what about one who abandons it, knowing it to be false? He said: 'Paradise.'
'Amr al-Qays said: I bear witness that I have abandoned it for him.
His opponent's name was Rabi'a ibn 'Aidan, and his story will be mentioned in the section on the letter 'R', if Allah wills.
'Aidan: with a fathah on the 'ayn and a sukun on the 'alif, and a final nun.
Abd al-Ghani said: It is also said to be 'Abdan with a kasrah on the 'ayn and a ba with a shaddah.
