Biography of Sa'id ibn Amir
Sa'id ibn 'Amir ibn Hudhaym ibn Salaman ibn Rabi'a ibn Sa'd ibn Jamuh al-Qurashi al-Jumahi. This is the statement of the people of genealogy, except for Ibn al-Kalbi, for he used to consider Banu Rabi'a and Sa'd ibn Jamuh as 'Arij, saying: Salaman ibn Rabi'a ibn 'Arij ibn Sa'd, said al-Zubayr: This is an error from Ibn al-Kalbi, and from anyone who said it, because 'Arij did not have a son except daughters, and the mother of Sa'id was Arwa bint Abi Mu'ayt, the sister of 'Uqba.
It was said: That Sa'id had accepted Islam before Khaybar, and had emigrated to Medina and witnessed Khaybar and what followed from it, and he was one of the ascetics of the Companions and their virtuous ones, and he used to preach to 'Umar ibn al-Khattab one day, so he said to him: Who can do that? He said: You, O Commander of the Faithful, for it is only that you say and it will be done.
And 'Umar appointed him over Hims, so he was informed that he was suffering from a disease, so he ordered him to come to him, so he did not see with him except a staff and a vessel, so 'Umar said to him: Is there nothing with you except what I see? Sa'id said to him: And what is more than this? A staff that I carry my children on, and a vessel that I eat from, so 'Umar said to him: Are you suffering from a disease? He said: No.
He said: What is the reason that I have been informed that you are suffering from a disease? He said: I was present when Khubayb ibn 'Adi was crucified, so I called upon the Quraish and I was among them, so I may have mentioned that, so I found a period until it afflicted me, so 'Umar said to him: Return to your work, so he refused, and he urged him until he was excused, it was said: That he was excused, and it was said: That when Abu 'Ubaid died, and Ma'az and Yazid, 'Umar appointed Hafs over them, so he did not leave until he died, and it was said: That 'Iyad ibn Ghunm appointed him, and 'Umar confirmed him.
And it was narrated that when the Romans gathered on the day of Yarmuk, Abu 'Ubaidah asked 'Umar for help, so he sent Sa'id ibn Hudhaym to him, and he has strange news about his asceticism, which we will not prolong in mentioning.
