Biography of Thabit ibn ad-Dahdah
Thabit b. al-Dhahhak, or al-Dhahhakah b. Na'im b. Ghunm b. Iyas, known as: Abu al-Dhahhak.
He belonged to the Banu Anif, or the Banu al-'Ajlan from the Bili confederates of the Banu Zayd b. Malik b. 'Awf b. 'Amr b. 'Awf.
Muhammad b. 'Umar al-Waqidi said: 'Abd Allah b. 'Amar al-Khutmi said: Thabit b. al-Dhahhak advanced on the Day of Badr with the Muslims, who were in disarray, having fallen into the hands of the enemy, so he began to shout: O Ansar, come to me! I am Thabit b. al-Dhahhak! If Muhammad has been killed, then God is alive and will not die. Fight for your religion, for God will show you and support you. A group of Ansar then rose up and carried the Muslims with him, while a battalion of Khazraj, led by: Khalid b. al-Walid, 'Amr b. al-'As, 'Ukasha b. Abi Jahl, and Dharar b. al-Khataab, advanced to confront them. Khalid b. al-Walid then charged at him with a spear, and he was struck and fell dead, along with the Ansar who were with him, and it is said: these were the last of the Muslims to be killed that day.
The Waqidi said: Some of our narrators say that he was not killed, but rather died from his wounds, and that he was carried back to the Prophet's camp at al-Hudaybiyah.
Samaak b. Harb narrated from Jabir b. Samurah, who said: We prayed over Thabit b. al-Dhahhak, an Ansari, and when we finished, a man came to the Prophet with a horse, and he rode it back, which supports the claim that he died on his bed.
It was narrated by the three (Ibn Manda, Abū Nuʿaym, Ibn ʿAbd al-Barr).
