Thabit ibn Qays

Thabit b. Qays b. Shamas b. Zuhayr b. Malik b. Amr al-Qays b. Malik, who is al-Aghar b. Thalaba b. Ka'b b. al-Khazraj, and his mother was a woman from Tayy, known as: Abu Muhammad, the father of Muhammad, and it was said: Abu Abd al-Rahman.

Thabit was the orator of the Ansar, and the orator of the Prophet ﷺ, as was Hassan his poet, and we have mentioned that before. He witnessed the Battle of Uhud, and what followed, and was killed on the Day of Yamama, during the caliphate of Abu Bakr, as a martyr.

We were informed by Abu al-Fadl Abdullah b. Ahmad b. Abd al-Qahir, who informed us that Abu Muhammad Ja'far b. Ahmad b. al-Husayn al-Muqri informed us, who informed us that al-Hasan b. Ahmad b. Shadhan informed us, who informed us that Usman b. Ahmad b. al-Sammak informed us, who informed us that Yahya b. Ja'far b. al-Zibriqan informed us, who informed us that Azhar b. Sa'd informed us, from Ibn Awn, who said: that Musa b. Anas informed us, from Anas b. Malik, that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sought out Thabit b. Qays, and said: Who knows his knowledge? A man said: I do, O Messenger of Allah. He went and found him sitting in his home, reclining his head, and said: What is wrong with you? He said: It is bad. I used to raise my voice above the voice of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and he nullified my actions, and I am from the people of the Fire. He returned to the Messenger of Allah, and informed him, Musa b. Anas said: and he returned to him, with a great smile, and said: Go and tell him: You are not from the people of the Fire, but rather from the people of Paradise.

We were informed by Ali b. Ubayd Allah, Ibrahim b. Muhammad, and Abu Ja'far, in their isnad, from Abu Isa, who informed us that Qutayba informed us, who informed us that Abd al-Aziz b. Muhammad informed us, from Suhayl b. Abu Salih, from his father, from Abu Hurayra, that the Prophet ﷺ said: How excellent is Abu Bakr, how excellent is Umar, how excellent is Abu Ubaydah, how excellent is Usayd b. Hudayr, how excellent is Thabit b. Qays, how excellent is Muadh b. Jabal, how excellent is Muadh b. Amr b. al-Jamuh.

Anas b. Malik said: When the people were revealed on the Day of Yamama, I said to Thabit b. Qays b. Shamas: Do you not see, O uncle? And I found him being wrapped, and he said: What is this? We did not fight with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in this manner. What a bad return you have made.
