Biography of Ubada ibn as-Samit
Ubadah ibn al-Samit Ubadah ibn al-Samit ibn Qays ibn Asram ibn Fihr ibn Tha`labah ibn Qawqal, whose name is Ghanam ibn Awf ibn Amr ibn Awf ibn al-Khazraj, Al-Ansari Al-Khazraji, Abu Al-Walid. His mother is Qurrat Al-Ain bint Ubadah ibn Nadlah bin Malik bin Al-Ajlan. He witnessed the first and second Aqaba. He was captain of the Qawqil Banu Awf bin Al-Khazraj. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ, made him brotherly with Abu Marthad Al-Ghanawi. He witnessed Badr, Uhud, the Trench, and all the battles with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and the Prophet ﷺ used him to give some alms, and said to him: Fear By Allah, do not bring on the Day of Resurrection a camel that is carrying it, or a cow that is mooing, or a sheep that is meowing! He said: By the One who sent you with the truth, I do not work on two people.
Muhammad ibn Ka'b al-Qurazi said: The Qur'an was compiled during the time of the Prophet ﷺ by five Ansar: Muadh ibn Jabal, Ubadah ibn al-Samit, Ubayy ibn Ka'b, Abu Ayyub, and Abu al-Darda'. Ubadah used to teach the people of Suffah the Qur'an, and when the Muslims conquered the Levant, Omar ibn al-Khattab sent him. He sent [with him] Muadh ibn Jabal and Abu al-Darda', to teach the people the Qur'an. In the Levant and teaching them about religion, he established Ubadah in Homs, and Abu Dardaa resided in Damascus, and Muadh went to Palestine, then Ubadah later went to Palestine, and Muawiyah disagreed with him in something that Ubadah denied, so Muawiyah harshened his words to him, so Ubada said: I will never live with you in one land. He left for Medina, and Omar said: What brings you forward?
So he told him. He said: Return to your place, so (1) Allah cursed a land in which there are neither you nor people like you. He wrote to Muawiyah: You have no authority over it. Anas bin Malik, Jabir bin Abdullah, Fadalah bin Ubaid, Al-Miqdam bin Amr bin Maadikarb, Abu Umamah Al-Bahili, Rifa'ah bin Rafi', and Aws bin Abdullah Al-Thaqafi narrated from him, And Sharhabeel bin Hasanah, all of them companions. A group of followers narrated from him. Al-Awza'i said: The first person to be appointed judge of Palestine was Ubadah ibn al-Samit.
