Biography of Usayd ibn Safwan
Usayd ibn Safwān, with a short vowel on the 'u', also.
He was a companion [of the Prophet], and counted among the people of Hijaz; 'Abd al-Malik ibn 'Umayr related narrations exclusively from him.
Abū Mansūr ibn Mukārim ibn Ahmad ibn Sa'īd al-Mu'addib informed us, with his isnād to Abū Zakariyyā' Yazīd ibn Iyās al-Azdī al-Mawsilī, who said: Muhammad ibn 'Abd Allāh ibn 'Ammār informed us, who said: 'Alī ibn Harb informed us, who said: Duhlum ibn Yazīd al-Mawsilī informed us, who said: al-'Awwām ibn Hawshab informed us, who said: 'Umar ibn Ibrāhīm al-Hāshimī informed us, from 'Abd al-Malik ibn 'Umayr, from Usayd ibn Safwān, who was a companion of the Prophet ﷺ, who said: When Abū Bakr, may God be pleased with him, passed away, and the people of Madīnah were crying and grieving, just like on the day the Prophet ﷺ passed away, 'Alī ibn Abī Tālib, may God be pleased with him, came hastily, crying and invoking [God's mercy], and saying: Today the prophetic caliphate has ended...
He then mentioned the hadith in full.
Abū 'Umar al-Darīr and some other scholars also narrated it with similar isnād from 'Umar ibn Ibrāhīm, from Ismā'īl ibn 'Ayāsh, from 'Abd al-Malik ibn 'Umayr, from Usayd ibn Safwān.
All three of them mentioned it.
