Biography of Jalbib

Jaliyb, with the jīm letter being pronounced with a qāniḍil-like sound, was an Anṣārī.

He is mentioned in a hadith by Abū Burzah al-Aslamī regarding the marriage of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ to the daughter of a man from the Anṣār. He was short and had a thick beard, so the Anṣārī was nicknamed Abu al-Jāriyah, and his wife was displeased with this, so she heard the jāriyah (maid servant) what the Messenger of Allah ﷺ intended and she said, 'I have accepted,' and she submitted to what pleased the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then called for her, and said: 'O Allah, bestow upon her good fortune, and do not make her life like that.' As a result, she became one of the most affluent Anṣārī women in terms of wealth and property.

Abdullāh ibn Ahmad al-Khātiyb informed us, in his isnād to Abū Dāwūd al-Tayālisī, who informed us, Hammad ibn Salamah, from Thābit, from Kinnān ibn Nuʿaym al-ʿAdawī, from Abū Burzah al-Aslamī, that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was on a campaign, and when he had finished fighting, he said: 'Have you lost anyone?' They said: 'By Allah, we have lost so-and-so and so-and-so.' He said: 'But I have lost Jaliyb,' and they found him with seven men who had killed him, and they then killed him. He came to the Prophet ﷺ and informed him, and he said: 'He killed seven, and they then killed him. This is from me, and I am from him,' until he repeated it two or three times. He then placed his arms outstretched, and they were placed on the arm of the Prophet ﷺ until a grave was dug for him. He did not have a bed except for the arms of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ until he was buried, and he did not mention a bath. Dailam ibn Ghazwān also narrated it from Thābit, from Anas, and it is a mistake.

It was narrated by the three (Ibn Manda, Abū Nuʿaym, Ibn ʿAbd al-Barr).
