Sa'id ibn al-As

Sa'id ibn al-'As ibn Saida ibn al-'As ibn Umayya ibn Abd Shams ibn Abd Manaf al-Qurashi al-Umawi, and his grandfather, known as Abu Ahya, was the most noble of the Quraysh. His mother, Sa'id's mother, was Umm Sa'id, Umm Kulthum bint 'Amr ibn 'Abd Allah ibn Abu Qais ibn Abd Wad ibn Nasr ibn Malik ibn Hanzala ibn 'Amir ibn Lu'ayy al-Amriyyah.

He was born in the year of the Hijra, or it was said: but rather in the year one, and his father, al-'As, was killed on the day of Badr as a disbeliever, killed by 'Ali ibn Abu Talib.

Umar ibn al-Khattab said: I saw al-'As ibn Sa'id on the day of Badr searching for the dust of his father, like a lion, and 'Ali stood firm against him and killed him, and Umar said to Sa'id ibn al-'As one day: I did not kill your father, but rather I killed your paternal uncle, al-'As ibn Hisham, and I do not regret killing a disbeliever, and Sa'id ibn al-'As said to him: If I had killed him, I would have been on the truth, and he was on falsehood, and Umar was amazed by his words.

His grandfather, Abu Ahya, when he wore a cloak in Mecca, no one else wore a cloak like it, out of respect for him, and he was called: the one with the crown.

And this Sa'id was one of the most noble of the Quraysh, their most generous, and their most eloquent, and he was one of those who wrote the Mushaf for 'Uthman ibn 'Affan, and 'Uthman appointed him over Kufa after al-Walid ibn 'Uqba ibn Abu Mu'ayt.

He invaded Tabaristan and conquered it, and he invaded Jorjan and conquered it, in the year nineteen or thirty, and Azerbaijan was conquered, and he invaded it, and conquered it, in the saying of some.

When 'Uthman was killed, he stayed in his house and avoided the Fitnah, and he did not attend the Battle of the Camel or the Battle of Siffin, and when the matter was settled with Mu'awiya, he came to him, and he had a long conversation with Mu'awiya, and Mu'awiya rebuked him for his absence from his battles, and he excused himself, and Mu'awiya accepted his excuse, and then he appointed him over Medina, and he would appoint him whenever Marwan was removed from Medina, and he would appoint Marwan whenever he was removed, and Sa'id ibn al-'As was very generous and charitable, and when someone asked him for something, and he did not have it, he would write a debt for him until he was able to pay it, and he would gather his brothers every Friday and prepare food for them, and he would take off his clothes for them, and send them gifts, and send a lot of charity to their families, and he would send his servant to the mosque in Kufa every Friday night with a bag of money, and he would put it in front of the worshippers, and he was a great man, and many worshippers would gather in the mosque in Kufa every Friday night, except that he was very old.

Sa'id ibn al-'As narrated from the Prophet ﷺ and from 'Umar and from 'Uthman and from 'A'ishah.

His sons, Yahya and 'Amr al-Ashdaq and Salim ibn 'Abd Allah ibn 'Umar and 'Urwah narrated from him.

Ibn Shihab narrated from Yahya ibn Sa'id ibn al-'As from his father Sa'id, he said: He asked Abu Bakr for permission to enter while the Prophet ﷺ was reclining on a mat in 'A'ishah's house.

He gave him permission, and he was in that state, and he finished his need, and then he left, and then 'Umar asked for permission.

And 'A'ishah said to him: Why did you not tremble for Abu Bakr and 'Umar as you trembled for 'Uthman, and the Prophet ﷺ said: 'Uthman is a young man, and I feared that if I gave him permission, he would not be able to finish his need in that state that I was in.

Sa'id ibn al-'As died in the year fifty-nine, and when his death was near, he said to his sons: Which of you will accept my will?

His eldest son said: I, father.

He said: It contains my debt, he said: What is your debt?

He said: Eighty thousand dinars.

He said: From where did you get it?

He said: O my son, I got it from a generous man, and I gave him a share, and a man came to me, and his blood was flowing from his face due to shame, and he began to ask me for his need before he asked me for it.

And the descendants of Abu Ahya were cut off, except for Sa'id ibn al-'As, and it was said: that Khalid ibn Sa'id also descended from him, and his mention has come before.
