Biography of Abdur-Rahman ibn Awf

Abd al-Rahman bin Awf Abd al-Rahman bin Awf bin Abd Awf bin Abd bin al-Harith bin Zahra bin Kulab bin Murrah al-Qurashi al-Zuhri, (1) nicknamed Abu Muhammad. His name in pre-Islamic times was: Abd Amr; according to another report, Abd al-Kaaba, so the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, called him Abd al-Rahman. His mother was Al-Shifa bint Awf bin Abd bin Al-Harith bin Zahra. He was born ten years after Al-Fil. He converted to Islam before the Messenger, peace be upon him, entered Dar Al-Arqam. He was one of the eight who came before Islam, and one of the five who converted to Islam at the hands of Abu Bakr. We mentioned them in the biography of Abu Bakr. He was one of the first immigrants. He migrated to Abyssinia and to Medina. the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, became a brother between him and Saad bin Al-Rabi'.

He witnessed Badr and Uhud and all the scenes with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, sent him to Dumat al-Jandal to a dog. He wrapped it around his hand and draped it between his shoulders (2). And he said to him: If Allah grants you victory. He then can marry the daughter of their king - or he said: their noble - and Al-Asbagh (3) bin Tha'labah bin Damdam Al-Kalbi was their noble, so he married his daughter Tamadur bint Al-Asbagh. She bore him Abu Salamah bin Abdul Rahman. He was one of the ten people attested to be in Paradise, and one of the six companions of the Shura Council, among whom Omar Ibn al-Khattab made the caliphate. He reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, died while he was satisfied with them, and that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, prayed behind him on a journey.

On the Battle of Uhud, he underwent twenty-one surgeries. He was injured in his leg, so he was limping on it, and his bends fell out, so he became weak. He spent a lot in the cause of Allah. He freed thirty slaves in one day.

Ibrahim bin Muhammad bin Mihran al-Faqih, Ismail bin Ali al-Mudhkir and others told us, with their chain of transmission to Abu Issa al-Tirmidhi: Saleh bin Mismar al-Marwazi told us, Ibn Abi Fadeek told us, on the authority of Musa bin Yaqoub, on the authority of Umar (1) bin Saeed, on the authority of Abd al-Rahman bin Humaid, on the authority of his father: Saeed bin Zaid told him in a group that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, said: Ten will be in Paradise: Abu Bakr is in Paradise, Omar is in Paradise, Ali, Uthman, Al-Zubayr, Talha, Abd al-Rahman bin Awf, Abu Ubaidah bin al-Jarrah, and Saad bin Abi Waqqas - he said: So he counted these nine and remained silent about the tenth - so the people said: We ask you, by Allah, who is the tenth? He said: "You called me by Allah.

The one-eyed man is in Paradise." He said: "He is Sa'id bin Zaid bin Amr bin Nufayl (3)." Abu Al-Faraj bin Abi Al-Raja Al-Asbahani told us, he said: It was read to Al-Hasan bin Ahmad while I was present and listening. Reported by Abu Nu'aym Al-Hafiz, on the authority of Humaid, who said: Anas that the Messenger, peace be upon him, made brotherhood between the Muhajireen and the Ansar. He made brotherhood between Saad bin Al-Rabi'. And Abdul Rahman bin Awf, and Saad said to him: I have money, so between you and me, I have two wives, so see which one I love so that I can divorce her, and if she is free. He then can marry her. He said: I have no need of your family and money. May Allah bless your family and money. Show me the market (4).

Reported by " Abu Mansur Muslim bin Ali bin Muhammad bin Al-Sihi, on the authority of Abd al-Rahman ibn Awf, who said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ, said: "Ten will be in Paradise: Abu Bakr is in Paradise, Omar is in Paradise, Uthman is in Paradise, Ali is in Paradise, Talha is in Paradise, al-Zubair is in Paradise, Abd al-Rahman Ibn Awf is in Paradise, Sa'd Ibn Abi Waqqas is in Paradise, Sa'id Ibn Zaid is in Paradise, and Abu Ubaidah Ibn al-Jarrah is in Paradise" (1) He said: Ahmad Ibn Awf told us.

Ali, Musa bin Hayyan Al-Masry told us, Muhammad bin Omar bin Ubayd Allah Al-Rumi told me, he said: I heard Khalil bin Murrah narrating on the authority of Abu Maysara, on the authority of Al-Zuhri, on the authority of Abu Salamah bin Abdul Rahman, on the authority of his father, on the authority of the Prophet ﷺ: "The superiority of the scholar over the worshiper is seventy degrees, and the distance between every two degrees is like the distance between the heaven and the earth." the Prophet ﷺ said: "Abd al-Rahman bin Awf is trustworthy in heaven, trustworthy on earth." When Omar, peace be upon him, died, Abdul Rahman bin Awf said to the Shura companions among whom Omar made the caliphate: Who will remove himself from it and choose for the Muslims? They did not respond to that, so he said: I am removing myself from the caliphate and choosing for the Muslims.

They responded to that and took their covenants on him, so he chose Uthman and pledged allegiance to him. The story is famous. We mentioned it in "Al-Kamil" in (2) History. He was great in trade, good at it, and had a lot of money. Another report states: He entered Umm Salamah and said: O mother, I was afraid that my abundance of wealth would destroy me. She said: "Son, spend. Reported by " Abu Muhammad bin Abi Al-Qasim, on the authority of Anas bin Malik, who said: When Abdul Rahman bin Awf emigrated, my brother, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, made peace between him and Othman bin Affan, and said to him: I have two walls, so choose which one you want? He said: May Allah bless your two walls. Why did you convert to Islam? Tell me. On the market. He said: So guide him. He was buying the fat woman, the iqita and the ihab (1), so he collected them and got married.

He came to the Prophet ﷺ and said: "May Allah bless you, even if you have a sheep." He said: So his money increased, until seven hundred camels carrying land, flour and food were brought to him. He said: When I entered the city, a trembling was heard among the people of the city, and Aisha said: What is this trembling? She was told: A camel was presented to Abd al-Rahman bin Awf, seven hundred camels carrying wheat, flour, and food. Aisha said: I heard the Prophet ﷺ say: "Abdul Rahman bin Awf will enter Paradise crawling." When Abdul Rahman heard this, he said: O his mother, I bear witness to you that she is with her loads, her clothes (2) and her fights for the sake of Allah. (3) Likewise, in this narration, he brought brotherhood between him and Uthman. It is true that this was with Saad bin Al-Rabi' Al-Ansari, as we mentioned before.

Muammar narrated on the authority of Al-Zuhri, who said: Abd al-Rahman bin Awf gave in charity during the reign of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, four thousand half of his wealth, then forty thousand in charity, then forty thousand dinars in charity. He then mounted five hundred horses for the sake of Allah, then mounted five hundred mounted ones for the sake of Allah. Most of his money was from trade. Humaid narrated, on the authority of Anas, who said: There was a talk between Khalid bin Al-Walid and Abd al-Rahman bin Awf, and Khaled said to Abd al-Rahman: You are prevailing over us due to the days in which you preceded us. This reached the Prophet ﷺ and he said: "Call my companions for me, for by the One in Whose Hand is my soul, if one of you spent the equivalent of Uhud in gold, it would not reach a mudd or half of one of them" (4).

This happened between them when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, marched Khaled bin Al-Walid to Bani Judhamah after the conquest of Mecca, and Khaled killed them by mistake, so the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, paid tribute to the dead and gave them the price of what he had taken from them. In pre-Islamic times, Banu Judhaymah had killed Awf bin Abd Awf, the father of Abd al-Rahman bin Awf. They had killed al-Fakih bin al-Mughirah, Khalid's uncle. Abd al-Rahman said to him: You killed them because they killed your uncle. Khaled said: They killed your father. He spoke harshly, and the Prophet ﷺ said what he said. Reported by Abu Yasser bin Abi Habah and more than one authoritative person, on the authority of his father, who said: that Abd al-Rahman was brought food. He was fasting, so he said: Musab bin Umair was killed, He is better than me, so he was shrouded in his cloak.

If his head was covered, his legs would be visible, and if his feet were covered, his head would be visible - and I think he said: Hamzah was killed while he was better than me - and then the world was expanded for us as much as he had given - or he said: We are given from the world what was given to us - and we feared that our good deeds had been hastened for us. He then began to cry until he stopped eating (1). Reported by Abu al-Fadl ibn Abi al-Hasan al-Tiri, on the authority of Abd al-Rahman ibn Awf that when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, who said: Take your place, so he prayed, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ prayed. peace be upon him, with the prayer of Abdul Rahman (2).

Ibn Abbas, Ibn Omar, Jabir, Anas and Jubair bin Mut'im, and his sons: Ibrahim, Hamid, Abu Salamah, Mus'ab, the sons of Abdul Rahman, Al-Miswar bin Makhramah, who is the nephew of Abdul Rahman, Abdullah bin Amer bin Rabi'ah, Malik bin Aws bin Al-Hadathan, and others, narrated from him. He died in the year thirty-one in Medina, when he was seventy-five years old, and bequeathed fifty thousand dinars for the sake of Allah, said Urwa bin Al-Zubayr. Al-Zuhri said: Abdul Rahman bequeathed to those who remained among those who witnessed Badr, four hundred dinars for each man. They were one hundred, so they took it, and Othman took it from among those who took: and he bequeathed a thousand horses for the sake of Allah.
