Definition of Cause / Means
As-sabab: the rope used to climb palm trees, plural asbab.
The Almighty says: 'Let them ascend the ways of heaven' (Sad 10).
Everything that connects one thing to another is a sabab. 'And We gave him of everything the means' (Al-Kahf 84).
Cutting the ties (sabbaba) means severing them.
The term is used for any cause or means to achieve a goal.
[And they should consider that] when those who have been followed disassociate themselves from those who followed [them], and they [all] see the punishment, and cut off from them are the ties [of relationship],
And do not insult those they invoke other than Allah, lest they insult Allah in enmity without knowledge. Thus We have made pleasing to every community their deeds. Then to their Lord is their return, and He will inform them about what they used to do.
Whoever should think that Allah will not support [Prophet Muhammad] in this world and the Hereafter - let him extend a rope to the ceiling, then cut off [his breath], and let him see: will his effort remove that which enrages [him]?
The ways into the heavens - so that I may look at the deity of Moses; but indeed, I think he is a liar." And thus was made attractive to Pharaoh the evil of his deed, and he was averted from the [right] way. And the plan of Pharaoh was not except in ruin.
