Definition of Isthmus / Barrier
Al-barzakh: the barrier and limit between two things.
Some say its origin is 'barzah' then Arabized.
Allah says: 'Between them is a barrier (barzakh) they do not transgress' (Ar-Rahmân: 20), referring to the separation between fresh and salt water.
Al-barzakh also refers to the intermediate world between death and resurrection: 'Behind them is a barzakh until the Day they are resurrected' (Al-Mu'minûn: 100).
That I might do righteousness in that which I left behind." No! It is only a word he is saying; and behind them is a barrier until the Day they are resurrected.
And it is He who has released [simultaneously] the two seas, one fresh and sweet and one salty and bitter, and He placed between them a barrier and prohibiting partition.
Surah Ar-Rahman : 20 Meccan
﴿بَيْنَهُمَا بَرْزَخٌ لَّا يَبْغِيَانِ﴾
Between them is a barrier [so] neither of them transgresses.
