The congregational prayer carries an immense reward. 'Uthman reports that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said:
Whoever prays isha in congregation is like the one who stands half the night; and whoever prays fajr in congregation is like the one who prays the whole night.reported by Muslim
The Prophet went as far as announcing his wish to burn the houses of those who did not join the prayer (al-Bukhari 644, Muslim 651). A blind man asked him permission to pray at home, having no guide; he granted it, then called him back: "do you hear the call to prayer? Yes. Then answer it" (Muslim 653).
By agreement of the jurists, the congregation is formed by two: the imam and a single follower, man or woman, in the mosque or elsewhere. Malik ibn al-Huwayrith reported the Prophet's order: "when the prayer comes, perform the adhan you two, then the iqama, and let the elder of you two lead" (reported in the two Sahihs).
The one who recites the Book of Allah best will lead the people; if they are equal in recitation, the most knowledgeable in the Sunna; if they are equal, the earliest in emigration.Muslim 673
The Prophet also said: "if they are three, let one of them lead them, and the most worthy of being imam is the best reciter" (Muslim 672). At Quba, before the Prophet's arrival in Medina, Salim, the freed man of Abu Hudhayfa, led the prayer of the first Emigrants because he was the most versed in the Quran (reported by al-Bukhari).
Ibn 'Umar reports that the Prophet ordered the muezzin, on cold or rainy nights while traveling: "pray in your dwellings" (reported in the two Sahihs). Illness, rain, cold and danger are among the excuses that exempt from joining the congregation.
The follower arrives when the rows are full: the majority of schools (Hanafis, Malikis, Shafi'is) judge his prayer valid, even alone behind the rows, while disapproving of it. Abu Bakra arrived during the Prophet's bowing and bowed before reaching the row; he told the Prophet, who said: "may Allah increase your zeal, do not repeat" (al-Bukhari 750).
Choose your mosque for the quality of its recitation and the imam's faithfulness to the Sunna. While traveling, two people can form a group: adhan, iqama, and the elder or the more competent leads.
The man says 'Subhana Allah' audibly to himself; the woman strikes one hand against the other (Muslim 416).
Valid but discouraged when row space exists; if space is lacking, lawful without fault.
She prays behind the men's rows; her prayer is valid (reported of the Prophet's wives).
