Eating out and managing doubt
Non-halal restaurant, doubtful meat, fish and vegetarian: fiqh's method for eating out without anguish or laxity.

Modern social life often takes place at the table: fiqh gives a clear method between certainty and suspicion, grounded in classical texts and clarified for Europe by the European Council for Fatwa and Research.
The rule of doubt
The lawful is clear, the unlawful is clear; between them is what raises doubt: whoever avoids doubt purifies his religion and his honour.al-Bukhari 2051
- The presumption of lawfulness: fish, vegetables, dairy products and eggs are lawful by default, whatever the restaurant; it is the prohibition that must be proven, not the licence;
- meat: order meat of identified ritual slaughter, or fish, or vegetarian; the European Council for Fatwa and Research, in its "criterion of halal food and ritual slaughter", holds the meat of the People of the Book lawful by default (sura al-Ma'ida 5) when nothing forbidden is established, while recommending the Muslim to seek confirmed ritual slaughter;
- wine in the cooking (sauce, flambé): avoid dishes that mention it; ambiguous dishes: ask for the composition, and failing that abstain from that specific dish.
The method of three questions
- What is served? (identifiable ingredients);
- is there a manifest prohibition? (pork, alcohol, meat whose unlawfulness is established);
- is the doubt reasonable?: the religion is ease (al-Bukhari 39): fiqh forbids suspicious investigation as much as negligence.
Social situations
- Guest with a non-Muslim: eat what is presented as lawful without intrusive investigation (sura al-Ma'ida 5; sura al-An'am 118: "eat of that over which the name of Allah has been pronounced, if you believe in His verses"), avoiding the manifest;
- the invitation to the pub: frequenting is not consuming: water, juice, sober participation, departure at prayer time;
- certification: one serious certification suffices; inquiring about every abattoir is not the Sunna: certainty is not overturned by mere doubt.
Practical note
Spot halal restaurants and fish cuisines, read dishes by ingredient, keep social peace: the Muslim eats out without complexes when the rules are clear, and politely abstains when they are not.
