Abdul Basit Abdus-Samad (1927-1988), known as the Voice of Mecca, was a major Egyptian Quran reciter. He joined Egyptian Radio in 1951, served at the Imam Al-Shafi'i and Imam Al-Hussein mosques, recorded both murattal and mujawwad Qurans, toured internationally, and became the first head of Egypt's Reciters Syndicate in 1984.
