Main themes of the surah في سورة Al-Maun
لا يقبل الله صلاة حائض إلا بخمار» فلذلك وصفهم بقوله: {الذين ...
Allah does not accept the prayer of a menstruating woman except with a headcover. Therefore, He described them with His statement: {الذين هم}, meaning with their souls and pure inner selves. And since the intention is to describe their neglect, He said: {عن} instead of {في} in {صلاتهم}, meaning it is worthy to be attributed to them due to its obligation upon them and its necessity for their spiritual benefits and other benefits. {ساهون} means they are deeply engrossed in neglecting it and wasting it, and their lack of concern for it. This is clarified by the fact that Ibn Mas'ud, may Allah be pleased with him, recited it as 'لاهون'. The benefit of using this descriptive phrase is to indicate that it is a characteristic that is inherent to them, to the point where they do not even remember it from their own selves. Therefore, it is explained by what comes after it. Al-Baghawi narrated that the Prophet, peace be upon him, was asked about this verse and he said: 'It means to waste time.' And Ibn 'Abbas, may Allah be pleased with them, said: 'They are the hypocrites who abandon prayer when they are alone and perform it when they are with people.' Since someone with this characteristic does not care about anything except what is present, like animals, He said, indicating that what is meant by 'sahoon' here is to waste it when alone by not performing it, and to corrupt its purpose when with others: {الذين هم} meaning with the entirety of their inner selves {يرآؤن} meaning they perform their prayers and other deeds so that people will see them, so that people will praise them and treat them well, even if it is just with words.
