And their allies; it is said in the lexicon: and it is not used except for what is predominantly honorable, it is as if they said: from what kind of affliction are they (sparing you)? So He said: {they inflict upon you} meaning they burden you and dominate you in a way of belittling and overpowering {bad punishment} through enslavement. And since the context is one of extreme patience, it necessitates coordination in His saying: {and they slaughter} i.e., slaughtering many people in a fatal manner - as indicated by the expression of those in the elevated place by (the term) killing, and specifying (again) slaughter to indicate that death (is inflicted) by knife {your sons and they shame} i.e., they request to spare the lives {of your women} to indicate that this is another affliction {and} in that {there is a great affliction from your Lord} i.e., the one who nurtures you, manages your affairs {*}.
With His praise, may He be exalted. Mentioning the reminder of the Torah regarding this: It is stated in the fifth book (of Moses): "And the Lord has chosen you to be a people for His own possession out of all peoples that are on the face of the earth, not because you were more in number than any other people did the Lord choose you, but because He wanted to fulfill His promise to your fathers. Therefore the Lord brought you out with a mighty hand, and redeemed you from the house of bondage, from the hand of Pharaoh king of Egypt, that He might establish His covenant with you, and that you should know that the Lord is your God, the only true God, and the faithful God Who keeps covenant and mercy to a thousand generations with those who love Him and keep His commandments; And requites those who hate Him by destroying them; He will not be slack with him who hates Him; He will requite him face to face. You shall therefore keep the commandments, and the statutes, and the ordinances, which I command you this day, to do them. Then the Lord your God will keep with you the covenant and the mercy which He swore to your fathers; And He will love you, and bless you, and multiply you; He will also bless the fruit of your body, and the fruit of your land, and your corn, and your wine, and your oil, and the increase of your cattle, and the multitude of your flock, in the land which He swore to your fathers to give you."
In the past, they will not be compensated for it. This is a call to those harmful individuals to repent. The shift from the present tense to the past tense {آذيتمونا} is because they are awaiting God's command in the future; perhaps He will command them to be patient. The phrase "on God" refers to Him who possesses all attributes of perfection alone. {فليتوكل المتوكلون *} Those who recognize their own incapacity, whether they are believers or not, entrust their affairs to others to relieve them of it. For He is all-encompassing in knowledge, complete in power, and everyone else is incapable. Patience is the key to relief and the gateway to unlimited good, releasing one from distress. The truth will inevitably prevail and dominate, while falsehood will inevitably be defeated and subdued, even if the trial is prolonged.
It (the punishment) seizes them from behind, and it is more intense, just like a sudden, unforeseen event. Alternatively, the meaning could be that following this punishment in Hell, there is another punishment that your minds are incapable of describing in detail, except for its severity. When He finished addressing them and explaining that nothing can protect them from His punishment, He presented an analogy, saying: {like} - used here to describe a peculiar situation - {those who disbelieved} in their Lord, ridiculing Him, are like someone who intends to pursue a certain path but fails to consider their own well-being along the way. Instead, they are misled by someone who deviates from the right path, leading them to a desolate place where it is impossible to reside or return from, resulting in their complete loss. Since the difference between a human being and nothingness lies in their actions, He mentioned what He knows about their actions, which serves as an example to answer the question, "What is their example?" He said: {their actions}, referring to the noble deeds they performed in the world, such as maintaining family ties, freeing slaves, ransoming prisoners, generosity, and other similar acts. On the Day of Judgment, these actions are like {ashes}, which are what remains after being burned, crushed into dust.
Its dimensions and vastness {by the Right} by the established fact of placing everything in its proper place according to wisdom, not by imagination or illusion like magic. It is known that they are a container, and the contained, which is the primary intention, cannot be anything less than its container or inferior to it. How can it be assumed that He creates something within them that is idle, either being invalid and not being abolished, or valid and not being realized? How can it be conceived that He, who has the power to bring them into existence from nothingness - and they are the greatest creation and most magnificent in their status - is incapable of restoring those within them, who are weaker and smaller in stature? Or that He created them for the sake of truth, which is the restoration of people, making them persist and remain in a state that does not lead to annihilation. It follows from this that He is of immense power, for He is capable {to destroy you} by any means of destruction: death or otherwise {and bring about a new creation} other than you, or bring you back after you have perished, so that you are recreated - as you are - a new creation; and "new" means cut off from prior work at the beginning, and its origin is cutting. The ancestor is the father of the father, cut off from procreation by a father. And the ancestor is the opposite of jest, it cuts off distance, either sensibly or in meaning {and that} this destruction
The speech of the Arabs, for those who are familiar with it - and who is familiar with it? - is sweeter than magic, and its purity surpasses that of observed thought. It is more cohesive, with some parts supporting others more effectively, and it presents a more seamless transition from supererogatory to obligatory {their greeting}. This refers to their interactions with one another and the greeting of the angels towards them. A greeting is a reception with honor in address, which demonstrates the esteemed status of the person being addressed {in which there is peace *}. This signifies well-being, safety, and preservation. Each of them says to the other: "May God preserve your well-being," and similar expressions that convey the continuation of health. This contrasts with the state of the people of falsehood in the Fire, who are afflicted with destruction and pains.
It is deeply rooted in evil, with no goodness in it {like a foul tree}. Since one of the most beneficial actions is to eradicate it and be relieved of its presence in any state, he constructed the phrase: {uprooted} meaning it was completely removed by pulling out its roots {from above the earth} in the opinion of everyone who has an opinion. Then he explained the reason for this by saying: {it has no} and emphasized the negation by saying: {stability}, meaning for anyone with even a little intellect, because it has no benefit, and its existence is actually harmful, even if it only occupies the land. Similarly, a foul and false word has no basis and will not last, even if it prevails for a time, because its argument is flawed and its armies are defeated.
And evil is the settlement, that place in which they were made to settle.
Besides them, there are other types of expenditures that are evaluated based on His laws, such as charity and others, to perfect what is between them and Him, in order to rescue themselves from the Fire. He limited it to these two characteristics because there was no obligation in Mecca except for these two, in addition to what has been previously mentioned about their virtue and generality. Perhaps he mentioned them in a conditional context to alert them that the Prophet's statement is the strongest of means, and it is obligatory for them not to lag behind him at all. Then, he pointed to the continuity of these two characteristics with His statement: {in secret and openly}. It is possible that by "secret" is meant voluntary acts, and by "openly" is meant obligatory acts. Then, he warned those who are negligent in serving Him, from the day that turning away from Him was a cause of misguidance, saying, referring to the short duration of their works: {before a Day} that is very great, not like any of the days you know {there will be no respite} for a captive to be ransomed {nor any intercession}, i.e., no intermissions, or friendly relations, from which intercession or support may be obtained; (the plural form of "relation" is like "scarcity" and "scarcities", or it is a source), and that is an indication that none of them will be a cause of deliverance for a devastated person.
The callers to the One who possesses all blessings for a good life with happiness in both worlds conclude the verse by stating the characteristics of humanity that necessitate this: {The human} - this type of being, due to its inherent nature of having a sense of self, forgetting what benefits and harms it, and being disturbed by what saddens or pleases it - {is indeed wronging and ungrateful}, extreme in its wrongdoing and ingratitude, as it neglects to express gratitude and instead falls into ingratitude. This is similar to the conclusion in Surah An-Nahl: {Forgiving and Merciful}, as that surah begins with a prohibition from hastening punishment, because mercy precedes; and part of mercy is to give people a respite and allow them to enjoy benefits. Therefore, the estimation there is: {And if you were to count the blessings of Allah, you would not be able to enumerate them; indeed, humanity is wronging and ungrateful} {But His Lord} does not hasten punishment for them because He is Forgiving and Merciful. However, this surah begins with humanity being in darkness.
He further emphasized to the people his increased desire for forgiveness, as it does not diminish his glory or wisdom in any way - as referenced in the supplication of Jesus, peace be upon him, in {Al-Ma'idah}. When he invoked the prevention of evils arising from the types of humans and Satan, with the security of the country and its people having faith, he mentioned the reason that led him to specify this, seeking to bring about benefits. He said: {Our Lord} - that is, O Lord and Lord of those whom You have decreed will follow me with Your upbringing for us, which is the best upbringing - {I have settled} It is as if God, glory be to Him, had informed him that his offspring would be numerous, like the stars, which was after the glad tidings of Isaac, peace be upon him. So, he said: {some of my offspring} He mentioned this as an affirmation, alerting (the listener) that it is a matter which hardly seems credible, given the circumstances - (he said this) to inform (the listener) that he is desirous of it. {In a valley} - that is, Makkah - which is in a low-lying area surrounded by mountains, through which streams flow - {without vegetation}. When he negated worldly support for himself, he affirmed for himself the hereafter, indicating that the two abodes are mutually exclusive. It is as if this supplication was after he had built the House - as previously mentioned, also by way of identifying the country - so he said: {near Your sacred house} - that is, the one which You have made sacred, and forbidden to be approached, and prevented (others) from having authority over by (Your) awe, so no one possesses it except You.
He who comes forth from your loins shall inherit you; and He said to him: Look to the sky and count the stars, if you can count them. Thus shall your offspring be. So Abraham believed in God. When the praise for the blessing was completed after supplicating for relief from the obstacles to happiness and concluded with gratitude for the response to the supplication, he seized the opportunity to follow it with a supplication for adornment with the ornament of worship, which he stated was his intention by making him dwell among his offspring and then establishing it, indicating its difficulty for the soul except with the assistance of God. He said: {O Lord} i.e., O You who created me, O You who owns my affairs, {make me one who consistently performs prayer}, i.e., this type that indicates extreme humility, consistently established in it. As if God Almighty had informed him that among his offspring would be one who disbelieves, he said, out of etiquette: {and from my offspring}. When it was the greatest of pillars after faith, the singular pronoun for supplication with it, imploring God Almighty with the blessings that He had bestowed upon him, which no one else had received at that time, as he indicated with the name of the Lord, then he increased in supplication with his saying: {Our Lord}, i.e., O You who has been gracious to us, and He joined the pronoun added to Him, looking to those of his offspring who followed him, because what comes after it is another speech, i.e., O Lord and O Lord of.
And it is not for one to think that Allah {ولا تحسبن الله}, the Most Great Ruler, who is the wisest of all judges, is unaware. Since the assumption of neglect of reckoning leads to attributing to the ruler incapacity, foolishness, or forgetfulness, and given that He has established His power and wisdom in this surah and others, He exonerates Himself from forgetfulness, so He says: {غافلاً عما يعمل الظالمون} (not unaware of what the wrongdoers do). Those who have replaced the blessings of Allah with disbelief, and thus are deeply entrenched in wrongdoing, even if their wrongdoing is based on a scientific assumption they establish. It is as if it was said: What will He do to them? So He said: {إنما يؤخرهم} (He only delays them) i.e., He delays their reckoning over a speck or a crumb, whether they are tormented in this world or not, {ليوم تشخص فيه الأبصار} (to a Day when eyes will stare in shock), i.e., it will be opened and will be in such a state that it will not blink. {فيه} (in which) they will be {مهطعين} (hastening), i.e., rushing with utmost speed to where they are called, out of fear and panic, while directing their gaze towards the Caller, not diverting it to anything else, {مقنعي رؤوسهم} (with their heads raised), i.e., lifting and stretching them, looking in humility and submission to one direction, which is the direction of the Caller, not turning right or left.
That is, He who possesses complete perfection, for if one assumes that, then {He will not fail in His promise to His messengers} in that He will honor His allies, humiliate His enemies, and destroy them for their wrongdoing, and make His allies inherit the earth after them. Then, He explained this by saying - emphasizing that the abundance of opponents and their strength over the passage of days may expose the listener to doubt: {Indeed, Allah} is He who possesses majesty and honor {is Almighty}, meaning He is capable and cannot be overpowered {and has the power to take revenge} from those who oppose His command. And when the greatness of that day, in which eyes will be transfixed, and which is the greatest day in which revenge will be taken, has been established, He described it by saying: {On the Day} when {the earth} of this kind {will be replaced} with a strange and great replacement {with another earth}, and {the heavens} after the spread of their stars, their splitting, and other matters related to them; and replacement is changing something or its attribute to a substitute {and they will emerge} , that is, the wrongdoers who used to say that they would not be presented to Allah for reckoning; and emerging is the appearance of a person from what was hidden {to Allah}, that is, to Him who possesses the attributes of perfection, {the One}, who has no partner {the All-Powerful}, against whom nothing can resist His will, so they will emerge in such a way that they will not doubt that nothing is hidden from Him. As for the believers, they have always known that.

Alif, Lam, Ra. [This is] a Book which We have revealed to you, [O Muhammad], that you might bring mankind out of darknesses into the light by permission of their Lord - to the path of the Exalted in Might, the Praiseworthy -
Allah, to whom belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. And woe to the disbelievers from a severe punishment
The ones who prefer the worldly life over the Hereafter and avert [people] from the way of Allah, seeking to make it (seem) deviant. Those are in extreme error.
And We did not send any messenger except [speaking] in the language of his people to state clearly for them, and Allah sends astray [thereby] whom He wills and guides whom He wills. And He is the Exalted in Might, the Wise.
And We certainly sent Moses with Our signs, [saying], "Bring out your people from darknesses into the light and remind them of the days of Allah." Indeed in that are signs for everyone patient and grateful.
And [recall, O Children of Israel], when Moses said to His people, "Remember the favor of Allah upon you when He saved you from the people of Pharaoh, who were afflicting you with the worst torment and were slaughtering your [newborn] sons and keeping your females alive. And in that was a great trial from your Lord.
And [remember] when your Lord proclaimed, 'If you are grateful, I will surely increase you [in favor]; but if you deny, indeed, My punishment is severe.' "
And Moses said, "If you should disbelieve, you and whoever is on the earth entirely - indeed, Allah is Free of need and Praiseworthy."
Has there not reached you the news of those before you - the people of Noah and 'Aad and Thamud and those after them? No one knows them but Allah. Their messengers brought them clear proofs, but they returned their hands to their mouths and said, "Indeed, we disbelieve in that with which you have been sent, and indeed we are, about that to which you invite us, in disquieting doubt."
Their messengers said, "Can there be doubt about Allah, Creator of the heavens and earth? He invites you that He may forgive you of your sins, and He delays your death for a specified term." They said, "You are not but men like us who wish to avert us from what our fathers were worshipping. So bring us a clear authority."
Their messengers said to them, "We are only men like you, but Allah confers favor upon whom He wills of His servants. It has never been for us to bring you evidence except by permission of Allah. And upon Allah let the believers rely.
And why should we not rely upon Allah while He has guided us to our [good] ways. And we will surely be patient against whatever harm you should cause us. And upon Allah let those who would rely [indeed] rely."
And those who disbelieved said to their messengers, "We will surely drive you out of our land, or you must return to our religion." So their Lord inspired to them, "We will surely destroy the wrongdoers.
And We will surely cause you to dwell in the land after them. That is for he who fears My position and fears My threat."
And they requested victory from Allah, and disappointed, [therefore], was every obstinate tyrant.
Before him is Hell, and he will be given a drink of purulent water.
He will gulp it but will hardly [be able to] swallow it. And death will come to him from everywhere, but he is not to die. And before him is a massive punishment.
The example of those who disbelieve in their Lord is [that] their deeds are like ashes which the wind blows forcefully on a stormy day; they are unable [to keep] from what they earned a [single] thing. That is what is extreme error.
Have you not seen that Allah created the heavens and the earth in truth? If He wills, He can do away with you and produce a new creation.
And that is not difficult for Allah.
And they will come out [for judgement] before Allah all together, and the weak will say to those who were arrogant, "Indeed, we were your followers, so can you avail us anything against the punishment of Allah?" They will say, "If Allah had guided us, we would have guided you. It is all the same for us whether we show intolerance or are patient: there is for us no place of escape."
And Satan will say when the matter has been concluded, "Indeed, Allah had promised you the promise of truth. And I promised you, but I betrayed you. But I had no authority over you except that I invited you, and you responded to me. So do not blame me; but blame yourselves. I cannot be called to your aid, nor can you be called to my aid. Indeed, I deny your association of me [with Allah] before. Indeed, for the wrongdoers is a painful punishment."
And those who believed and did righteous deeds will be admitted to gardens beneath which rivers flow, abiding eternally therein by permission of their Lord; and their greeting therein will be, "Peace!"
Have you not considered how Allah presents an example, [making] a good word like a good tree, whose root is firmly fixed and its branches [high] in the sky?
It produces its fruit all the time, by permission of its Lord. And Allah presents examples for the people that perhaps they will be reminded.
And the example of a bad word is like a bad tree, uprooted from the surface of the earth, not having any stability.
Allah keeps firm those who believe, with the firm word, in worldly life and in the Hereafter. And Allah sends astray the wrongdoers. And Allah does what He wills.
Have you not considered those who exchanged the favor of Allah for disbelief and settled their people [in] the home of ruin?
[It is] Hell, which they will [enter to] burn, and wretched is the settlement.
And they have attributed to Allah equals to mislead [people] from His way. Say, "Enjoy yourselves, for indeed, your destination is the Fire."
[O Muhammad], tell My servants who have believed to establish prayer and spend from what We have provided them, secretly and publicly, before a Day comes in which there will be no exchange, nor any friendships.
It is Allah who created the heavens and the earth and sent down rain from the sky and produced thereby some fruits as provision for you and subjected for you the ships to sail through the sea by His command and subjected for you the rivers.
And He subjected for you the sun and the moon, continuous [in orbit], and subjected for you the night and the day.
And He gave you from all you asked of Him. And if you should count the favor of Allah, you could not enumerate them. Indeed, mankind is [generally] most unjust and ungrateful.
And [mention, O Muhammad], when Abraham said, "My Lord, make this city [Makkah] secure and keep me and my sons away from worshipping idols.
My Lord, indeed they have led astray many among the people. So whoever follows me - then he is of me; and whoever disobeys me - indeed, You are [yet] Forgiving and Merciful.
Our Lord, I have settled some of my descendants in an uncultivated valley near Your sacred House, our Lord, that they may establish prayer. So make hearts among the people incline toward them and provide for them from the fruits that they might be grateful.
Our Lord, indeed You know what we conceal and what we declare, and nothing is hidden from Allah on the earth or in the heaven.
Praise to Allah, who has granted to me in old age Ishmael and Isaac. Indeed, my Lord is the Hearer of supplication.
My Lord, make me an establisher of prayer, and [many] from my descendants. Our Lord, and accept my supplication.
Our Lord, forgive me and my parents and the believers the Day the account is established."
And never think that Allah is unaware of what the wrongdoers do. He only delays them for a Day when eyes will stare [in horror].
Racing ahead, their heads raised up, their glance does not come back to them, and their hearts are void.
And, [O Muhammad], warn the people of a Day when the punishment will come to them and those who did wrong will say, "Our Lord, delay us for a short term; we will answer Your call and follow the messengers." [But it will be said], "Had you not sworn, before, that for you there would be no cessation?
And you lived among the dwellings of those who wronged themselves, and it had become clear to you how We dealt with them. And We presented for you [many] examples."
And they had planned their plan, but with Allah is [recorded] their plan, even if their plan had been [sufficient] to do away with the mountains.
So never think that Allah will fail in His promise to His messengers. Indeed, Allah is Exalted in Might and Owner of Retribution.
[It will be] on the Day the earth will be replaced by another earth, and the heavens [as well], and all creatures will come out before Allah, the One, the Prevailing.
And you will see the criminals that Day bound together in shackles,
Their garments of liquid pitch and their faces covered by the Fire.
So that Allah will recompense every soul for what it earned. Indeed, Allah is swift in account.
This [Qur'an] is notification for the people that they may be warned thereby and that they may know that He is but one God and that those of understanding will be reminded.
