And His knowledge encompasses all things, so He is capable of creating them in a manner of innovation, then in a more perfect manner, and then in an even more delightful manner, and so on, ad infinitum. This is befitting of His perfect essence and majestic attributes. We seek refuge in Allah from the blindness of the Mu'tazilah and the philosophers, who possess rigid minds and dull intellects. The Arabs, due to their ignorance, worship others alongside Him, despite acknowledging Him. However, this other entity has no power over anything, nor any knowledge of anything. This question, with its answer, has shattered their argument and exposed their error and shame, making it clear to those with intellect that they are obstinate. Since their response lacked these two attributes and indicated that they were unaware of them, He followed their statement with a reminder, saying, in a tone of rebuke and reproach, {Who has made for you}. For if it were their statement, they would have said to us, {The earth a bed}, meaning, a stable and firm cradle. And if He had willed, He could have made it a shaking and unstable ground, as you see in some mountains, or made it a floating table that would not remain still, being on the flow of water. And just as He made the earth a resting place for your bodies, He made your bodies a resting place for your souls, and the soul's ability to manage and control the body is a manifestation of its strength and presence.

Anas and Tirmidhi reported on the authority of Ibn Umar, may God be pleased with them, that the Prophet, peace be upon him, would, when mounting his riding beast, say three times: "Glory be to Him who has made this subservient to us" {سبحان الذي سخر لنا هذا}, and then he would say: "O God, I ask You, in this journey of mine, for righteousness, piety, and deeds that will please You. O God, make this journey easy for us and make the distant (journey) short for us. O God, You are the Companion on the journey and the Deputy over the family. O God, we have set out on our journey and made our families behind us." When he would return to his family, he would say: "We are returners, repentant, and, God willing, worshippers of our Lord, giving thanks." Ahmad reported on the authority of Abu al-As al-Khuzai, may God be pleased with him, who said: "The Messenger of God, peace be upon him, made us ride some camels from the charity camels to perform Hajj. We said: 'O Messenger of God, we do not think these (camels) can carry us.' He said: 'There is not a single camel but that Satan is on its back. So mention the name of God when you ride them, as He has commanded you, and then tame them for yourselves, for it is God, the Almighty, who actually carries (the burden).' When (the Prophet) learned of this acknowledgment from them and the subsequent drawing near (to God), that the entire world is interconnected, with one thing made subservient to another, and it was established that His creator is distinct from Him, not needing anything in any way, for there is no one like Him, it was a subject of wonder that they attributed a child to Him. He then said, turning away from their address, indicating displeasure and anger: {وجعلوا} "And they attribute" - as if they asked Him and He responded - it is necessary for Him to say so because there is no one like Him - "to Him" - while they attributed a child to Him and made Him, by their saying, before (the attribution)

The person who turns away from the effort of ijtihad to the lowliness of taqlid, which leads to the stagnation of the mind, even if the evidence is clear, and which leads to rebellion, persistence, obstinacy, compulsion, and tyranny. Most people, for the most part, follow these individuals: {We found our fathers} - and they are more knowledgeable about matters than us - {upon a community}, meaning a comprehensive affair that deserves to be followed and a path and religion. They affirmed, with certainty, their rejection of any opposition to their views, turning away from that. {And we are upon their footsteps}, nothing else. Then, they explained the subject and the object, and reported a second piece of information, and they began again to complete their intention, saying, as an explanation, that the reason for following is the precedent: {following}, meaning imitating, riding on the traditions of their path, adhering to it because they preceded us, and our condition is the best in terms of uprightness, the closest, and the fastest.

And when it is as if it were said, the Warner said, 'What shall I do?' He responded by saying: {Say}, that is, O Warner - this is according to the recitation of the majority, and according to the recitation of Ibn 'Amir, Hafs, and 'Asim, the construction would be that the hearer said, 'What did the Warner say in response to them?' and it was answered by saying, he said in denial of them: {Do you take} that is, do you follow your fathers in every circumstance and consider them guided, even if {I bring you} and the pronoun

Among the wisdom in all His judgments is their concurrence with what they know of the religion of Abraham, peace be upon him, before they altered it, and the matter of Moses and Jesus, peace be upon them, regarding the oneness of God. They exceeded the neglect that led to their arrogance due to the blessing, with something worse - denial. They said, out of obstinacy, stubbornness, goodness, and transgression, without pause or reflection: 'This' - pointing to the truth that corresponds to reality - 'is magic,' meaning an illusion with no reality to it. Since their situation necessitated, without a doubt or pause, their recognition of what he brought and their submission to it, they said, affirming their rejection of it, what was established in their minds: 'And we are disbelievers in it,' meaning they were rooted in concealing its truth, specifically, so that no one would recognize it and it would have no followers. After informing about their criticism of the Quran, He follows it with information about their criticism of the one who brought it, covering his affair, acting on their reports in the conclusion of what preceded about themselves with disbelief, adding to and persisting in what the blessings had led them to of arrogance. So, He said: 'And they said' - after they were overwhelmed by what they mentioned about the matter of Abraham, peace be upon him, regarding prophethood and messengership, and similarly about those after him from among his children - for they could not persist in their obstinacy in denying that the Prophet could be from among humans, a statement from one who has great authority in managing the universe and dominating the kingdom.

For one who is in a state of heedlessness, he is aided by his own demise, as indicated by the phrase that describes the darkness of insight at dusk, which is a metaphor for the weakness of vision for one who forgets the remembrance of Allah in the most repugnant manner {من يعش}, meaning one who acts like the heedless, and is either granted sight by day and night or is blind. This is according to the recitation of Ya'qub with the letter shin pronounced with a fatha, and the combination of matters that surpass and transgress {about the remembrance of the Most Merciful}, whose mercy encompasses all, and there is no mercy for anyone except that it is from Him, just as He did with these individuals when He granted them and their fathers provisions, which is something very insignificant. Yet, they turned away from the signs and proofs, and did not look at them except with a weak glance, like the glance of one whose sight is weak at dusk {نقيض}, meaning We decree and ordain and determine a punishment {for him} due to his turning away from the remembrance of Allah {a satan}, meaning a fiery being, far from mercy, that surrounds and constricts him, like the shell of an egg, which is the inner shell. {So he is his companion}, bound to him, just as a prisoner is bound, and inseparable, unable to escape from him as long as he remains heedless of the remembrance of Allah. Thus, he beautifies blindness for him and makes him think he is on the path of guidance, just as one who is enlightened by the remembrance of the Most Merciful is granted an angel who is his ally and informs him of every good thing. The remembrance of Allah is a strong fortress against Satan, and when the servant leaves it, the enemy captures him, as stated in the hadith.

Israel, peace be upon him, the preserver of their scripture from the Torah, the Gospel, the Psalms, and the Book of the Prophets, said, affirming the neighbor who understands some of the time: {from before you}. And since their followers had altered and changed, they could not be trusted. He made a distinction through the messengers, saying: {from among Our messengers}, meaning by the reading of their followers of their books, which they had distorted in part. And He made your Book dominant over them, for when they read it before you and presented it to you, you knew its meanings and exposed their distortion and clarified the agreement of all the Books by returning what they had imposed upon them from the ambiguous to the clear. The intended meaning of this is similar to the intended meaning of the verse of Yunus {so ask those who recite the Book before you} {94} and the verse of the Prophets {this is a reminder from Me and a reminder of what came before Me} {24}, with the added indication of their distortion. Thus, the one being asked is, in reality, the Quran, which is the miracle on the tongue of the Prophet, to which all the messengers who took the covenant to believe in him and follow him bear witness. With this explanation, the weakness of the statement of those who say that the intended meaning is to ask the messengers in reality, because they gathered for him, may God's peace be upon him, in the Temple on the night of the Isra', becomes clear. For the intended meaning of this is only to put the Arab disbelievers and those among the People of the Book who are arrogant to shame, by their statement: 'Your religion is better than his, and you are more guided than him.'

It is said, 'Their master has encountered...' or that among them, in general and specific terms, there is a aspect, and the best of that is what Ibn Jarir alluded to, that every verse clarifies the proof against them and is more affirming than the previous one. For it indicates what it indicates and adds what is beneficial from the enormity, so it becomes, along with what came before it, greater than what came before it when it is presented and the proof is established by it. And when the estimation is: 'So they shall persist in their unbelief and will not return to anything from the signs, for We have made them heedless and blind, and surrounded them with deviation, due to Our knowledge of their state,' the verse {And We seized them} is a consequence of it, meaning a seizure of conquest and dominance {with the punishment}, meaning all of it, for We have sent down upon them its blows in a manner that teaches that We are capable of what We will, so We sent upon them the flood, and the locusts, and the lice, and the frogs, and the blood {clear signs}. And the cutting: the large cold, which was not seen before, burning with fire, and the death of the firstborn, so they were signs of the truth of Moses, peace be upon him, with what they have of miracle, and a punishment for them in this world connected to the punishment of the Hereafter. What a remarkable power and evident wisdom {so that they might return}, meaning to be in a state, in the view of the ignorant of the consequences, of one whose return is hoped for. And when Pharaoh was, in many of the blows with which he was struck,

And what He, may He be exalted, has responded to them with from the verse, specifically in the year that is intended, as is required by their speech and language, in that the origin of 'what' is for that which is not understood. And this is what is intended by His statement, may He be exalted, narrating about them: {And they said, 'Are our gods better or is he?'}, meaning, the idols and angels that we worship, {is he better} than them, meaning Jesus, and we are pleased to be with him. And when the inquiry into their response became intense, and the response had already been mentioned in the case of the prophets, He presented it to them here, that their intention by that is only mockery, ridicule, evasion, and argumentation. So He, may He be exalted, said: {They did not kill him}, meaning, the disbelievers did not kill the son of Zeberi in reality, and others among your people metaphorically, {they did not kill him} as an example for their gods with Jesus, peace be upon him, {but only for argument's sake}, meaning, to intend to kill you over your call through deception, and they know that what they have obligated you with is not obligatory and they never believed in its obligation, because the speech was only about their idols, and because the specificity in their speech is general, and because it has been followed by what clarifies the specificity and removes the ambiguity, on the condition that it is accepted. So they never followed what they obligated you with, that it is obligatory, {but they are a people} meaning, companions of strength in rebellion against what they attempt, {quarrelsome}, meaning, intense in quarreling, capable of contention. Imam Ahmad, Tirmidhi, and Ibn Majah narrated from...

Among the miracles, and whenever he saw a man following his way in his actions and nobility, he was guided to the truth in his matter. He said: 'This is like Jesus, peace be upon him.' Thus, he benefited from the Prophet and those who followed him with goodness, and attained Allah's pleasure. He also said: 'This guided one is enlightened in the matter of Jesus, peace be upon him, similar to his father Adam, peace be upon him, in his creation from a female without a male, but Adam, peace be upon him, is more wondrous.' And similar to his cousin John and his grandfather Isaac, peace be upon them, in their creation from a cause that is extremely weak. These are his good examples. He said: 'Whoever Allah wills to misguide from among them, it is not like that, but rather from the impossible things.' So when they made bad examples, Allah afflicted them with humiliation and subjugation. Ibn Barjan said: 'He specifically mentioned them - i.e., the Children of Israel - because they are the ones who will be deceived by the Antichrist and hasten to him.' Then he said: 'The example in this matter is when the Antichrist comes with those signs, calling to himself, and opposing what Jesus, peace be upon him, brings of reviving the dead and supporting him with the Holy Spirit. That is, he misguides whoever Allah wills to test - end.' The best interpretation is that the meaning of his being an example is that his matter is made very clear, to the point where he can be used as an example to clarify others, and he himself does not need an example to clarify him to those with even a little insight. And since the estimation is: 'If We had willed, We could have made all people like him, created from a female without a male {35:11}, and if We had willed, We could have made you all equal to them in the humiliation We have afflicted them with {43:31}'

Who is the man, they asked? Some said John the Baptist, others said Elijah, and others said Jeremiah, or one of the prophets. Then He said to them, 'But who do you say I am?' Simon Peter answered and said, 'You are the Christ.' Jesus answered and said to him, 'Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah, for flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but My Father who is in heaven. And I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.' From that time Jesus began to show to His disciples that He must go to Jerusalem, and suffer many things from the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and be raised the third day. Then He said to them, 'Whoever desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me. For whoever desires to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake will find it. For what profit is it to a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul? Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul?' And it is written {لوقا 14: 25-28}, and a great multitude went with Him. Then He turned to them and said, 'If anyone comes to Me and does not hate his father and mother, his wife and children, and brothers and sisters, yes, and his own life also, he cannot be My disciple. For which of you, intending to build a tower, does not sit down first and count the cost'

And they are therein in a state of desperation, meaning silent in their despair of salvation and relief. And since it might be thought by those lacking insight that this punishment is greater and more than they deserve, the Almighty responds by saying that their punishment will increase with their return to blaming themselves and their falling into regretful laments: {وما ظلمناهم} - a type of injustice, for the Almighty is incapable of injustice. {ولكن كانوا} - by nature, instinct, action, and deed, always {هم} - specifically {الظالمين} - because they rebelled against the One who bestowed great blessings upon them and intended never to cease doing so. Their actions are driven by their intentions, and if they were capable of avoiding death, they would not have died. Since desperation implies silence, it is known that their silence is not perpetual, for a person who becomes accustomed to a single state may eventually become numb to the pain. Thus, it is said that they are in a distant place where they do not hope to address the King, and despite their knowledge of despair, they still hold onto hopes of salvation, just as those in the world who long for the impossible. This is to increase their distress: {ونادوا} - and then it is explained that the one being called upon is the keeper of the Fire, so it is said to emphasize the distance by addressing him: {يا مالك} - and the reading 'ya mal' indicates that the punishment has weakened them.

Leave them to their worst state, {yakhūḍū}, that is, they act like one who wades in the water, placing their foot, which is their pillar, in something they do not know, and they may not be pleased with it due to their lack of knowledge about it. {Wayulʿabū}, that is, they act like one who plays, being engrossed in an action that neither benefits nor harms them. {Ḥattā yalāqū}, that is, they spend their lives in actions that do not benefit them, like those who strive to meet {yawmuhum alladhī yūʿadūn}, a day that has been promised to them, a promise that will not be broken, and in which their warning will be realized.

And when the Almighty nullified their specious arguments and rendered their delusions utterly futile, He commanded them regarding their polytheism and their claim of having a child, and other such things that their corrupt statements, attributed to them in this surah, entailed. He established the proofs of truth, set up the evidences of veracity, and negated what would have benefited them, warning them of what would harm them. Until He concluded that by saying, swearing with His majestic power and great authority, {We have indeed come to you with the truth}. Then, He restricted their response to rejecting that truth into two categories in two situations: a situation of open defiance and a situation of duplicity. He informed them that there is no salvation for them in either situation and that His messengers record all their affairs. This is despite His being independent of that, due to His knowledge of what they write, and other things that they are not aware of. This was a great boast and a severe rebuke, given what He had previously mentioned about their specious argument in claiming a child, and thus He reaffirmed the nullification of that claim and the reality of its demise. He concluded by expressing astonishment at their condition, in that they abandon the obvious aspects of matters and follow the obscure ones. This was part of their actions, like those of one who thinks that God, the Almighty, does not hear their statements that warrant their punishment, and the statement of His messenger that warrants his victory. This was an elaboration on what had been previously mentioned about their denial of His hearing their words. Since their intensification in their denial, their distance, and their obstinacy do not increase with the passage of time.

Ha, Meem.

By the clear Book,

Indeed, We have made it an Arabic Qur'an that you might understand.

And indeed it is, in the Mother of the Book with Us, exalted and full of wisdom.

Then should We turn the message away, disregarding you, because you are a transgressing people?

And how many a prophet We sent among the former peoples,

But there would not come to them a prophet except that they used to ridicule him.

And We destroyed greater than them in [striking] power, and the example of the former peoples has preceded.

And if you should ask them, "Who has created the heavens and the earth?" they would surely say, "They were created by the Exalted in Might, the Knowing."

And who sends down rain from the sky in measured amounts, and We revive thereby a dead land - thus will you be brought forth -

And who created the species, all of them, and has made for you of ships and animals those which you mount.

That you may settle yourselves upon their backs and then remember the favor of your Lord when you have settled upon them and say. "Exalted is He who has subjected this to us, and we could not have [otherwise] subdued it.

And indeed we, to our Lord, will [surely] return."

But they have attributed to Him from His servants a portion. Indeed, man is clearly ungrateful.

Or has He taken, out of what He has created, daughters and chosen you for [having] sons?

And when one of them is given good tidings of that which he attributes to the Most Merciful in comparison, his face becomes dark, and he suppresses grief.

So is one brought up in ornaments while being during conflict unevident [attributed to Allah]?

And they have made the angels, who are servants of the Most Merciful, females. Did they witness their creation? Their testimony will be recorded, and they will be questioned.

And they said, "If the Most Merciful had willed, we would not have worshipped them." They have of that no knowledge. They are not but falsifying.

Or have We given them a book before the Qur'an to which they are adhering?

Except for He who created me; and indeed, He will guide me."

And he made it a word remaining among his descendants that they might return [to it].

However, I gave enjoyment to these [people of Makkah] and their fathers until there came to them the truth and a clear Messenger.

But when the truth came to them, they said, "This is magic, and indeed we are, concerning it, disbelievers."

And they said, "Why was this Qur'an not sent down upon a great man from [one of] the two cities?"

Do they distribute the mercy of your Lord? It is We who have apportioned among them their livelihood in the life of this world and have raised some of them above others in degrees [of rank] that they may make use of one another for service. But the mercy of your Lord is better than whatever they accumulate.

And if it were not that the people would become one community [of disbelievers], We would have made for those who disbelieve in the Most Merciful - for their houses - ceilings and stairways of silver upon which to mount

And for their houses - doors and couches [of silver] upon which to recline

And gold ornament. But all that is not but the enjoyment of worldly life. And the Hereafter with your Lord is for the righteous.

And whoever is blinded from remembrance of the Most Merciful - We appoint for him a devil, and he is to him a companion.

And indeed, the devils avert them from the way [of guidance] while they think that they are [rightly] guided

Until, when he comes to Us [at Judgement], he says [to his companion], "Oh, I wish there was between me and you the distance between the east and west - how wretched a companion."

And never will it benefit you that Day, when you have wronged, that you are [all] sharing in the punishment.

Then will you make the deaf hear, [O Muhammad], or guide the blind or he who is in clear error?

And whether [or not] We take you away [in death], indeed, We will take retribution upon them.

Or whether [or not] We show you that which We have promised them, indeed, We are Perfect in Ability.

So adhere to that which is revealed to you. Indeed, you are on a straight path.

And indeed, it is a remembrance for you and your people, and you [all] are going to be questioned.

And ask those We sent before you of Our messengers; have We made besides the Most Merciful deities to be worshipped?

And certainly did We send Moses with Our signs to Pharaoh and his establishment, and he said, "Indeed, I am the messenger of the Lord of the worlds."

But when he brought them Our signs, at once they laughed at them.

And We showed them not a sign except that it was greater than its sister, and We seized them with affliction that perhaps they might return [to faith].

And they said [to Moses], "O magician, invoke for us your Lord by what He has promised you. Indeed, we will be guided."

But when We removed from them the affliction, at once they broke their word.

And Pharaoh called out among his people; he said, "O my people, does not the kingdom of Egypt belong to me, and these rivers flowing beneath me; then do you not see?

Or am I [not] better than this one who is insignificant and hardly makes himself clear?

Then why have there not been placed upon him bracelets of gold or come with him the angels in conjunction?"

So he bluffed his people, and they obeyed him. Indeed, they were [themselves] a people defiantly disobedient [of Allah].

And when they angered Us, We took retribution from them and drowned them all.

And We made them a precedent and an example for the later peoples.

And when the son of Mary was presented as an example, immediately your people laughed aloud.

And they said, "Are your gods better, or is he?" They did not present the comparison except for [mere] argument. But, [in fact], they are a people prone to dispute.

Jesus was not but a servant upon whom We bestowed favor, and We made him an example for the Children of Israel.

And if We willed, We could have made [instead] of you angels succeeding [one another] on the earth.

And indeed, Jesus will be [a sign for] knowledge of the Hour, so be not in doubt of it, and follow Me. This is a straight path.

And never let Satan avert you. Indeed, he is to you a clear enemy.

And when Jesus brought clear proofs, he said, "I have come to you with wisdom and to make clear to you some of that over which you differ, so fear Allah and obey me.

Indeed, Allah is my Lord and your Lord, so worship Him. This is a straight path."

But the denominations from among them differed [and separated], so woe to those who have wronged from the punishment of a painful Day.

Are they waiting except for the Hour to come upon them suddenly while they perceive not?

Close friends, that Day, will be enemies to each other, except for the righteous

[To whom Allah will say], "O My servants, no fear will there be concerning you this Day, nor will you grieve,

[You] who believed in Our verses and were Muslims.

Enter Paradise, you and your kinds, delighted."

Circulated among them will be plates and vessels of gold. And therein is whatever the souls desire and [what] delights the eyes, and you will abide therein eternally.

And that is Paradise which you are made to inherit for what you used to do.

For you therein is much fruit from which you will eat.

Indeed, the criminals will be in the punishment of Hell, abiding eternally.

It will not be allowed to subside for them, and they, therein, are in despair.

And We did not wrong them, but it was they who were the wrongdoers.

And they will call, "O Malik, let your Lord put an end to us!" He will say, "Indeed, you will remain."

We had certainly brought you the truth, but most of you, to the truth, were averse.

Or have they devised [some] affair? But indeed, We are devising [a plan].

Or do they think that We hear not their secrets and their private conversations? Yes, [We do], and Our messengers are with them recording.

Say, [O Muhammad], "If the Most Merciful had a son, then I would be the first of [his] worshippers."

Exalted is the Lord of the heavens and the earth, Lord of the Throne, above what they describe.

So leave them to converse vainly and amuse themselves until they meet their Day which they are promised.

And it is Allah who is [the only] deity in the heaven, and on the earth [the only] deity. And He is the Wise, the Knowing.

And blessed is He to whom belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth and whatever is between them and with whom is knowledge of the Hour and to whom you will be returned.

And those they invoke besides Him do not possess [power of] intercession; but only those who testify to the truth [can benefit], and they know.

And if you asked them who created them, they would surely say, "Allah." So how are they deluded?

And [Allah acknowledges] his saying, "O my Lord, indeed these are a people who do not believe."

So turn aside from them and say, "Peace." But they are going to know.
