Biography of Abdullah ibn Mas'ud
Abdullah bin Masoud Abdullah bin Masoud bin Ghafil bin Habib bin Shamkh bin Far bin Makhzoum bin Sahila bin Kahil bin Al Harith bin Tamim bin Saad bin Hudhayl bin Mudaraka bin Ilyas bin Mudar, Abu Abdul Rahman Al-Hudhali, an ally of Banu Zahra. In pre-Islamic times, Abu Masoud had been allied with Abd bin Al-Harith bin Zahra, and the mother of Abdullah bin Masoud, Umm Abd bint Abd Wad Ibn Sawa, was also from Hudhayl. His conversion to Islam in the past was the beginning of Islam, when Saeed bin Zaid and his wife Fatima bint Al-Khattab converted to Islam, long before Omar bin Al-Khattab converted to Islam. Al-Amash narrated, on the authority of Al-Qasim bin Abdul-Rahman, on the authority of his father, who said: Abdullah said: You saw me as the sixth of six. There is no Muslim on the surface of the earth except us.
Reported by The reason for his conversion to Islam was what Abu al-Fadl al-Tabari al-Faqih, on the authority of Abdullah ibn Masoud, who said: I was a young boy among the sheep of Uqba Ibn Abi Muayt, which I tended, so the Prophet ﷺ came with Abu Bakr, He said: Boy, do you have any milk? I said: Yes, but I am trusted. He said: Bring me a sheep that the stallion has not bred on. So I brought him a sheep or a log, but the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, seized it, so he began wiping the udder and praying until it came down, so Abu Bakr brought him a rock and he milked in it. He then said to Abu Bakr: Drink. So Abu Bakr drank, then the Prophet ﷺ drank after him. He then said to the udder: Reduce it. He reduced it and went back to how it was, then I came and said: O Messenger of Allah, teach me some of these words or this Qur'an. Then he wiped my head and said: You are a teacher boy.
He said: I have learned seventy surahs from him, and no human being has disputed with me about them. Reported by He was the first to recite the Qur'an aloud in Mecca: Abu Ubaid Allah bin Ahmad, on the authority of Muhammad bin Ishaq, who said: Yahya bin Urwa bin Al-Zubair told me, on the authority of his father, who said: The first to recite the Qur'an in Mecca after the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, was Abdullah bin Masoud. One day the companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, gathered and said: By Allah, the Quraysh have not heard this Qur'an. It is never spoken to her aloud. Is there a man who can hear them? Abdullah bin Masoud said: I am. They said: We fear them for you. We only want a man who has a clan that will prevent him from the people if they want him. So he said: Leave me, for Allah will prevent me.
So, in the morning, Abdullah reached the Maqam in the forenoon and Quraysh at its clubs, until he stood at the Maqam and said, raising his voice: "In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful, the Most Merciful, the Most Merciful, the Most Merciful, the Most Merciful, the Most Merciful, the Most Gracious, the Most Gracious, the Most Gracious, the Most Gracious, the Most Gracious, the Most Gracious, the Most Gracious, the Most Gracious, the Most Gracious, the Most Gracious, the Most Gracious, the Most Gracious, the Most Gracious, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful, has taught the Qur'an." Then he received it and recited it. They pondered and began to say: What does Ibn Umm Abd say?
Then they said: He is reciting some of what Muhammad had brought, so they stood up and began to hit him in the face. He began to recite until he reached what Allah wished for him to reach. He then went back to his companions. They were impressed with his face. They said: This is what we feared for you, so he said: The enemies of Allah have never been more insignificant to me than they are now, and if you wish, I can protect them with the same thing tomorrow? They said: It is enough for you. You have made them hear what they hate. When Abdullah converted to Islam, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, took him to him. He was serving him, and said to him: (Your permission is upon me to hear my supplication and lift the veil). He used to walk over him, put his shoes on, walk with him and in front of him, cover him when he bathed, and wake him up when he slept. He was known among the Companions as the owner of the black and the siwak.
Reported by Abu Al-Faraj Al-Thaqafi, on the authority of Abdullah, who said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ, said to me: (Your permission is upon me until the veil is lifted and you hear my silence until I exhaust myself). He migrated both times to Abyssinia and to Medina, prayed the two qiblahs, and witnessed the full moon. Uhud, the Trench, the Pledge of Ridwan, and all the other scenes with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. Yarmouk witnessed after the Prophet ﷺ and he was the one who finished off Abu Jahl, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, testified that he would go to Paradise. It was narrated on the authority of the Prophet ﷺ. The Companions narrated from him: Ibn Abbas, Ibn Omar, Abu Musa, Imran bin Husayn, Ibn al-Zubayr, Jabir, Anas, Abu Saeed, Abu Hurairah, Abu Rafi', and others. The followers narrated from him: Alqamah, Abu Wael, Al-Aswad, Masruq, Ubaidah, Qais bin Abi Hazim, and others.
Reported by Abu Mansour Muslim bin Ali bin Muhammad al-Mawsili al-Adl, on the authority of Abu Razin, who said: Ibn Masoud said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ, told me: Read Ali Surah An-Nisa. He said: I said: I read to you and to you was it revealed? He said: I would love to hear it from someone else. So I recited to him until I reached: "How then when We bring from every nation a witness and bring you as a witness against these"… until the end of the verse, his eyes filled with tears, peace be upon him. Reported by Abu Al-Barakat Al-Hasan bin Muhammad bin Al-Hasan bin Hibatullah Al-Dimashqi, on the authority of Hudhayfah, who said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ, said: And adhere to the covenant of Ibn Umm Abd. It was narrated by Salamah bin Kuhail, on the authority of Abu al-Za'ra', on the authority of Ibn Masoud. Ismail bin Ali bin Ubaid Allah and more than one person told us of their chain of transmission to Muhammad bin Isa.
Reported by Abu Kurayb, on the authority of Al-Aswad Ibn Yazid that he heard Abu Musa say, who said: My brother and I came from Yemen, and we only see that Abdullah bin Masoud is a man from the family of the Prophet ﷺ as we saw of his and his mother's entry to the Prophet ﷺ. Reported by Muhammad bin Isa, on the authority of Abd al-Rahman bin Yazid, who said: We came to Hudhayfah and said: Tell us about the people closest to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, in guidance and guidance, so we may take from him and hear from him. He said: The closest person to guidance, guidance, and respect to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, was Ibn Masoud, until he disappeared from us in his house, and the best-preserved companions of Muhammad knew that Ibn Umm Abd was one of them closest to Allah.
Reported by Muhammad bin Isa, on the authority of Ali, who said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ, said: If I had been the commander of anyone without consulting, I would have appointed Ibn Umm Abd. Among his virtues is that after the death of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ he witnessed great scenes, including: that he witnessed Yarmouk in the Levant and was on a voluntary day, and Omar bin Al-Khattab, may Allah's prayers and peace be upon him, led him to Kufa, and wrote to the people of Kufa: I have sent Ammar bin Yasser as an emir, and Abdullah bin Masoud as a teacher and a minister. They are among the nobles among the companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ from the people of Badr, so follow their example. And obey and listen to what they say. I have preferred you to Abdullah over myself.
Reported by ) Ibn Abi Hibba, on the authority of Umm Musa, who said: I heard Ali saying: (the Prophet ﷺ ordered Ibn Masoud to climb up on a tree to bring him something from it, and his companions looked at Abdullah's leg and laughed at the squishyness of his legs, so the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, said: What Are you laughing? Abdullah's leg will be heavier on the scales on the Day of Resurrection than Uhud. Reported by ) Omar bin Muhammad bin Tabarzad, on the authority of Ali, who said: We were sitting with him. They said: We have never seen a man of better character, nor more gentle in education, nor better to sit with, nor more pious than Ibn Masoud. Ali said: I ask you by Allah, is it the truth from your hearts? They said: Yes. He said: Oh Allah, I bear witness that I say what they said and better.
Abu Wael said: When Othman, peace be upon him, tore up the copies of the Qur'an, this was reported to Abdullah, so he said: Muhammad's companions knew that I was the most knowledgeable of them in the Book of Allah. I am not the best of them. If I had known that someone was more knowledgeable in the Book of Allah than me and that camels would deliver it to me, I would have come to him. Abu Wael said: So I stood up to the people to listen to what they were saying, but I did not hear any of Muhammad's companions denying that to him. Zaid bin Wahb said: I was sitting with Omar when Ibn Masoud came to him and was about to sit down to hide him from his palace, so Omar laughed when he saw him, so he started talking to Omar and making him laugh while he was standing. He then turned away, so Omar Basra followed him until he disappeared. He said: A manifold full of knowledge.
Ubaid Allah bin Abdullah said: When Abdullah's eyes calmed down, he would get up and I would hear him making a noise like the sound of bees until morning. Salamah bin Tammam said: A man met Ibn Masoud and said: Do not neglect a dreamer who remembers. I saw you yesterday and I saw the Prophet ﷺ on a high pulpit, and you were below him. He said: O Ibn Masoud, come to me, for you have dried up after me. He said: By Allah, why did you see this? He said: Yes, he said, so she decided to leave the city so that she could pray for Ali, and it took a few days until he died. Abu Dhabiyya said: Abdullah fell ill, so Othman bin Affan visited him and said: What are you ailing? He said: My sins. He said: What do you desire? He said: The mercy of my Lord. He said: Shall I not order a doctor for you? He said: The doctor made me sick. He said: Shall I not order a gift for you? He said: I have no need for it.
He said: It will be for your daughters. He said: Do you fear poverty for my daughters? I have commanded my daughters to recite Surah Al-Waqi'ah every night, if I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, say: (Whoever recites Al-Waqi'ah every night will never be struck by poverty). Rather, Othman said to him: Shall I not order your giving? Because he had withheld it from him for two years. When he died, he sent it to Al-Zubair, who gave it to his heirs. Another report states: Rather, Abdullah abandoned giving because he did not need it, and others did the same.
