Biography of Mu'adh ibn Jabal

Muadh bin Jabal bin Amr bin Aws bin Aadhi bin Adi bin Kaab bin Amr bin Adi bin Saad bin Ali bin Asad bin Sarida bin Tazid bin Jashm bin Al-Khazraj Al-Ansari Al-Khazraji, then Al-Jashmi. He performed what is attributed to him. He is: the brother of Salamah bin Saad, the Ansar tribe to which he is attributed. Some of them attributed him to the Banu Salamah, and Ibn Ishaq said: The Banu Salamah only called him, because he was the brother of Sahl bin Muhammad bin al-Jadd bin Qais on his mother's side, and Sahl was from the Banu Salamah. Al-Kalbi said: He is from Banu Adi, as we first attributed him. He said: There is no one left of Banu Adi, and their number is in Banu Salamah, and the last of them remaining is Abd al-Rahman bin Muadh, who died in the plague of Emmaus in the Levant. Another report states: He died before his father Muadh, so on this basis Muadh is the last of them, and this is correct.

Muadh was nicknamed Abu Abdul Rahman. He was one of the seventy Ansar who witnessed Aqaba. He witnessed Badr and Uhud, and all the scenes were with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, became a brother between him and Abdullah bin Masoud. He was eighteen years old when he converted to Islam. Reported by Abdul Wahhab bin Hibat Allah, on the authority of Abdullah bin Ahmad, who said: My father told me, Abu Muawiyah told us, on the authority of Al-A'mash, on the authority of Shaqiq, on the authority of Masruq, on the authority of Abdullah bin Amr, who said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ, said: "Take the Qur'an from four people: from Ibn Masoud, and Ubayy bin Ka'b, Muadh bin Jabal, and Salim the client of Abu Hudhayfah.

Reported by Ismail and others, on the authority of Anas Ibn Malik, who said: the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, said: "I have mercy on My nation, for my nation, Abu Bakr..." He mentioned the hadith, and said: "And the most knowledgeable of them about what is permissible and what is forbidden is Muadh bin Jabal." Abdullah bin Abi told us Nasr Al-Khatib, he said: Ja'far bin Ahmad Al-Qaari narrated to us, Ali bin Al-Muhsin narrated to us, Abu Sa'id Al-Hasan bin Ja'far bin Muhammad Al-Simsar narrated to us, Abu Sa'id narrated to us Shuaib Al-Harrani, Yahya bin Abdullah Al-Babalti told us, Salama bin Wardan told us, he said: I heard Anas bin Malik, he said: Muadh bin Jabal came to me from With the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He said: "Whoever bears witness that there is no god but Allah, sincere in his heart, will enter Paradise." So I went to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.

So I said: O Messenger of Allah, Muadh told me that you said: "Whoever bears witness that there is no god but Allah, sincere in his heart, will enter Paradise." He said: "Muadh spoke the truth. Muadh spoke the truth, Muadh spoke the truth." Sahl ibn Abi Hathmah narrated on the authority of his father, who said: "The ones who issued fatwas during the time of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, were among the immigrants: Omar, Uthman, and Ali, and three of the Ansar: Ubayy ibn Ka'b, Muadh ibn Jabal, and Zaid ibn Thabit. Jaber bin Abdullah said: Muadh bin Jabal was one of the people with the most beautiful face, the best character, and the most generous of hands. He owed a large debt, and his debtors were obligated to him until he was absent from their home for days. So his creditors asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, to bring him, so he sent for him. He came with his creditors. They said: O Messenger of Allah, we have failed in our rights.

So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, said: "May Allah have mercy on whoever gives alms to him." So some people gave alms to him, and others refused, so the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, removed him from his estate. His money, so they divided it among them. They received five-sevenths of their rights. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, said to them: "You have nothing but that." So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, sent him to Yemen and said: "Perhaps Allah will force you and pay off your debt." So he remained in Yemen until the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, died. Thawr ibn Yazid narrated, saying: When Muadh would pray at night, he would say: Oh Allah, the eyes have fallen asleep and the stars have fallen, and You are Ever-Living and Sustaining. Oh Allah, my request for Paradise is slow, and my escape from Hell is weak. Oh Allah, make for me a guidance that You will return to me on the Day of Resurrection. You do not break your promise.

When the plague occurred in the Levant, Muadh said: Oh Allah, grant the family of Muadh their share of this, so two women stabbed him and died, then his son Abd al-Rahman was stabbed and died. Then Muadh bin Jabal was stabbed. He began to faint. When he regained consciousness, he said: "O Allah, make me sad, for by Your glory, you know that I love you." Then he fainted. When he came to, he said the same thing. Amr bin Qais said: When death approached him, He said: Look, have we arrived in the morning? Some reports state: We did not wake up, until he came; according to another report, We had dawned, so he said: "I seek refuge in Allah from the night of its morning to Hell, welcome to death, welcome to the visitor of a beloved who came in need. Oh Allah, you know that I was afraid of you, and today I am begging you.

I did not love the world and the length of my stay in it to water rivers, nor to plant trees, but to thirst for the hot days. And struggling for hours, and crowding the scholars with knees while shaving the dhikr." Al-Hasan said: When Muadh approached death, he started crying. He was told: Are you crying while you are the companion of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and you, and you? He said: "I do not cry out of fear of death if it befalls me, nor of the world that I have left after me, but it is only the two fists. I do not know which of the two fists I belong to." According to another account, Muadh was one of those who broke the idols of Banu Salamah.

the Prophet ﷺ said: "He will appear before the scholars on the Day of Resurrection with one or two repetitions." Farwa Al-Ashja'i said, on the authority of Ibn Masoud: Muadh bin Jabal "was a nation obedient to Allah, an upright one" and he was not one of the polytheists, so I said to him: Allah only said: "Indeed, Abraham was a nation obedient to Allah." So he repeated his statement: "Mu'adh "was a nation obedient to Allah" the verse, and said: What is a nation? What is qant? I said: Allah and His Messenger know best. He said: The nation who knows good and follows it, and the obedient one who is obedient to Allah Almighty, and likewise Muadh was a teacher of goodness, obedient to Allah, may Allah bless him and his Messenger. The companions Omar, his son Abdullah, Abu Qatada, Abdullah bin Omar, Anas bin Malik, Abu Umamah Al-Bahili, Abu Laila Al-Ansari, and others narrated on his authority.
