Biography of Rafi' ibn Khudayj
Rafi' ibn Khadij Rafi' ibn Khadij ibn Rafi' ibn Adiyy ibn Zayd ibn Jashm ibn Haritha ibn Al-Harith ibn Al-Khazraj ibn Amr ibn Malik ibn Al-Aws Al-Ansari Al-Awsi Al-Harithi, this is how Abu Nu'aym and Abu Omar attributed him. Ibn Al-Kalbi attributed it to him and said: Rafi' ibn Khadij ibn Rafi' ibn Adiyy ibn Zaid ibn Amr ibn Zayd ibn Jashm. So he added: Zaid II and Omar, and Allah knows best. He was known by the kunya Abu Abdullah; according to another report, Abu Khadij. His mother was Halima bint Masoud bin Sinan bin Amer bin Adi bin Umayyah bin Bayadah. He had presented himself on the Battle of Badr, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, sent him back. Because he looked down on it, and allowed him to do so on Uhud, so he witnessed Uhud and the Trench and most of the scenes, and on Uhud an arrow struck him in his collarbone; in another account, in his thendawa (1), so he removed the arrow and the blade remained until he died.
And the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to him: I will bear witness for you on the Day of Resurrection. His wounds ended in the days of Abd al-Malik ibn Marwan. He died in the year seventy-four, when he was eighty-six years old. He was the leader of his people. The companions Ibn Omar, Mahmoud ibn Labid, al-Sa'ib ibn Yazid, and Usayd ibn Zuhair narrated from him. Among the followers: Mujahid, Ata', Al-Sha'bi, his son Abaya bin Rifa'ah bin Rafi', Amra bint Abdul Rahman, and others. Reported by Ahmad bin Uthman bin Abi Ali bin Mahdi, on the authority of Rafi' bin Khadij, who said: I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, saying: Travel at dawn, for it is greater in reward (3).
Reported by And Ibrahim bin Muhammad bin Mahran Al-Faqih and others, on the authority of Rafi' bin Khadij, who said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbade us from a matter that was beneficial to us, if one of us had land, to give it with some of its tax or in dirhams. He said: If one of you has land, let him give it to his brother or cultivate it. It is narrated as we mentioned. It was narrated on the authority of Rafi', on the authority of his uncles. He witnessed Siffin with Ali.
