Biography of Umm Salama

Umm Salamah bint Abi Umayyah Umm Salamah bint Abi Umayyah Ibn Al-Mughirah bin Abdullah bin Omar bin Makhzum Al-Qurayshi Al-Makhzoumiyah, wife of the Prophet ﷺ and her name: Hind. Her father was known as Zaad Al-Rukb. Before the Prophet ﷺ she was with Abu Salama bin Abdul-Assad Al-Makhzoumi. She bore him: Salama, Omar, Dorra, and Zainab. After he died, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ married her. She was one of the women who migrated to Abyssinia and to Medina. Reported by Abu Jaafar, on the authority of Ibn Ishaq, who said: My father Ishaq ibn Yasar told me, on the authority of Salamah ibn Abdullah ibn Umar ibn Abi Salamah, on the authority of his grandmother Umm Salamah, who said: When Abu Salamah decided to leave for Medina, he took his camel out and carried me. He carried my son Salamah with me. He then went out driving his camel.

When the men of Banu al-Mughirah ibn Abdullah ibn Umar ibn Makhzum saw him, they stood up to him and said: This is your soul. We have defeated it. Have you seen this companion of ours? What are you letting go around the country? They took the camel's rein from his hand and took me away. At that, the sons of Abd al-Asad became angry. They rushed to Salamah and said: By Allah, we will not leave our son with her since you took her away from our friend. So they fought with my sons Salamah until they dislocated his hand, and the sons of Abd al-Asad and Rahat Abi Salamah took him away, and the sons of al-Mughirah imprisoned me with them. My husband, Abu Salamah, set off until he reached Medina, where he separated me from my husband and my son. She said: I used to go out every morning and sit on the bench. I would not stop crying until the evening of a year or so.

Until a man from my cousins, from the Banu al-Mughirah, passed by me and saw what was wrong with me, so he had mercy on me and said to the Banu al-Mughirah: Will you not get rid of this poor woman? You separated her from her husband and her son. They said to me: Follow your husband if you want. Then the sons of Abd al-Assad responded to me with my son, so I left with my camel and put my son in my lap, then I went out looking for my husband in Medina, and no one of Allah's creation was with me, so I said: I will inform myself of whoever I meet so that I can approach my husband. Even when I was in Tan'im, I met Othman bin Talha bin Abi Talha, brother of Abi Abd al-Dar. He said: Where are you, daughter of Abi Umayyah? She said: I want my husband in the city. He said: Is there anyone with you? I said: No, by Allah, except Allah and this son of mine. He said: By Allah, you have no choice but to leave.

So he took the reins of the camel and set off with me, leading me. By Allah, I have never accompanied an Arab man. I think he was more generous than him. When he reached the house, he shouted at me and then stepped aside to a tree and lay down under it. When the wanderers approached, he rose to a camel, brought it forward, and set it aside. Then he stayed behind me and said: Ride. When I mounted and sat on my camel, he came, took his rein, and led me until we disembarked. He continued to do that until he brought me to Medina. When he looked at the village of Banu Amr bin Awf in Quba, he said: Your husband is in this village, and Abu Salamah was staying there, so I entered there with the blessing of Allah Almighty. He then left and returned to Mecca.

She used to say: I do not know of any family that was befallen in Islam what befell the family of Abu Salamah. I have never seen a companion who was more generous than Othman bin Talha. Another report states: She was the first Zaeena to migrate to Medina, and Allah knows best. the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, married her after Abu Salamah. Reported by Ya'ish ibn Sadaqah al-Faqih, on the authority of Ahmad ibn Shuaib, who said: Muhammad ibn Ismail ibn Ibrahim informed us, Yazid told us, on the authority of Hammad ibn Salamah, on the authority of Thabit al-Bunani, Ibn Umar ibn Abi told me
