Biography of Uqayl ibn Abi Talib
Aqeel bin Abi Talib Aqeel bin Abi Talib, Abu Talib's name: Abd Manaf bin Abd al-Muttalib bin Hashim bin Abd Manaf al-Qurashi al-Hashimi, cousin of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and the brother of Ali and Ja'far by their parents. He is the eldest of them. He was ten years older than Ja'far. He is ten years older than Ali. This was said by Muhammad (6) Ibn Saad and others. his kunya was Abu Yazid, his mother is Fatima bint Asad bin Hashim. the Prophet ﷺ said to him: "I love you with two loves, out of love for your kinship, and out of love for what I knew of my uncle's love for you (1)." Aqeel was one of those who went out with the polytheists to Badr under duress, and was captured on that day. He had no money, so his uncle Abbas ransomed him. Then he came as a Muslim before Al-Hudaybiyyah, and migrated to the Prophet ﷺ in the year eight.
He witnessed the Battle of Mu'tah. He then returned and fell ill, and no mention of him was heard in the Battle of Conquest, Hunayn, or Taif. the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, gave him one hundred and forty wasqs every year from Khaybar (2). It has been said: He was among those who remained steadfast on the day of Hunayn with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He was quick to respond, kept silence to his opponent, and had good things about him that we will not mention at length. He was the most knowledgeable of the Quraysh's lineage, and the most knowledgeable of them in its time, but he was hated by them, because he was considered their equal. He had a basket (3) that was put up for him in the mosque of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and people would gather to him to discuss genealogy and the days of the Arabs.
He often mentioned the faults of the Quraysh, but they opposed him for that, spoke falsely about him, attributed him to foolishness, and fabricated false hadiths about him. Among the things that helped them with him was his separation from his brother Ali, peace be upon him, and his march to Muawiyah in the Levant. another report states that Muawiyah said to him one day: "This is Abu Yazid, had he not known." That I am better for him than his brother, since he resided with us." Aqeel said: "My brother is better for me in my religion, and you are better for me in my world (4). I have preferred my world. I ask Allah for a good ending through him.
Reported by " But he went to Muawiyah because he was the wife of his paternal aunt Fatima bint Utbah bin Rabi'ah (5) and when: Abu Muhammad bin Abi al-Qasim al-Dimashqi, on the authority of his father, who said: Aqeel bin Abi Talib was in debt, so he came to Ali bin Abi Talib to Kufa, So he took him down and ordered his son Al-Hasan to clothe him. When evening came, he called for his dinner. He saw bread, salt, and beans. Aqeel said: What is it except what I see? He said: No. He said: Will you pay off my debt? He said: How much is your debt? He said: Forty thousand. He said: I don't have it. But be patient until my gift comes out, for it is four thousand, so I will pay it to you. Aqeel said to him: The houses of money are in your hand, and you are delaying me with your giving! He said: Do you order me to give you the Muslims' money, which they have entrusted to me?! He said: I will go to Muawiyah.
So he gave him permission, so Muawiyah came and said to him: O Abu Yazid, how did you leave Ali and his companions? He said: It is as if they were the companions of Muhammad, except that I did not see the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, among them. It is as if you and your companions were Abu Sufyan and his companions, except that I did not see Abu Sufyan among you. The next day, Muawiyah sat on his bed and ordered a chair to be placed next to the bed. Then he gave permission for the people and they entered, and Al-Dahhak bin Qais sat with him on his bed. Then he gave permission for Aqeel and he visited him and said: O Muawiyah, who is this with you? He said: Al-Dahhak Ibn Qais. He said: Praise be to Allah who removed the vileness and completed the deficiency! This is the one whose father castrated Bahman (1) with Al-Abtah. He was gentle with her castration.
Al-Dahhak said: I am aware of the virtues of Quraysh, and Aqeel is aware of their disadvantages. Muawiyah ordered him to give him fifty thousand dirhams, so he took it and returned. Hisham bin Muhammad bin Al-Sa'ib Al-Kalbi narrated, on the authority of his father, on the authority of Abu Salih, on the authority of Ibn Abbas, who said: There were four people among the Quraysh whom the people would mobilize and take to court: Aqeel bin Abi Talib, Makhramah bin Nawfal Al-Zuhri, Abu Jahm bin Hudhayfah Al-Adawi, and Huwaitib. Bin Abdul-Uzza Al-Amiri. The three considered the man's virtues when he came to them, and if he had more virtues, they alienated him from (2) his friend. Aqeel was counting the disadvantages, so whatever was the greatest disadvantage, he left it. Then the man says: I wish I had not come to him, so that I would be exposed to my sins that people did not know.
His son Muhammad, Al-Hasan Al-Basri, and others narrated from him. He speaks little. Reported by Abdul Wahhab bin Hibat Allah bin Abi Hibba, on the authority of Abdullah bin Ahmad, who said: My father told me, Al-Hakam bin Nafi' told us, Ismail bin Ayyash told us, on the authority of Salem bin Abdullah, on the authority of Abdullah bin Muhammad.
