Biography of Yazid ibn Abi Sufyan
Yazid bin Abi Sufyan, and the name of Abu Sufyan was Sakhr bin Harb bin Umayyah bin Abd Shams bin Abd Manaf al-Qurashi al-Umayyad, brother of Muawiyah. He was the best of the sons of Abu Sufyan. He was known as Yazid al-Khair. His mother, Umm al-Hakam, was Zainab bint Nawfal bin Khalaf from the Banu Kinanah; according to another report, Her name was Hind bint Habib bin Yazid. He was known by the kunya Abu Khaled. He became Muslim on the day of the conquest. Mecca, and Hunayn witnessed, and the Prophet ﷺ gave him from the spoils containing one hundred camels and forty uqiyahs, which Bilal weighed for him. Abu Bakr al-Siddiq, peace be upon him, used him to lead an army and marched him to the Levant. He went out with him on foot.
Ibn Ishaq said: When Abu Bakr finished Hajj in the year twelve, he sent Amr ibn al-Aas and Yazid ibn Abu Sufyan, Abu Ubaidah ibn al-Jarrah, and Sharhabeel ibn Hasnah went to Palestine, and ordered them to march on Balqa. Khalid ibn al-Walid wrote while he was in Iraq ordering him to march to the Levant, so he marched on Samawah and raided Ghassan in Marj Rahit from the land of Damascus. Then he marched and descended on the Busra Canal, and Yazid ibn Abi Sufyan and Abu Ubaidah came to him. And Sharhabeel, so Busra was reconciled. It was the first of the cities of the Levant to be conquered. Then they marched towards Palestine. They met with the Romans in Ajnadin between Ramla and Bayt Jibreen, so Allah defeated the Romans in Jumada al-Awwal in the year thirteen.
When Omar ibn al-Khattab, peace be upon him, appointed Abu Ubaidah as ruler, and Allah opened the Shamat to him, Yazid ibn Abi Sufyan appointed Palestine, and when Abu Ubaidah died, he appointed Muadh ibn as successor. Mountain, and Muadh died, so he appointed Yazid as his successor, and Yazid died, so he appointed his brother Muawiyah as his successor, and the death of all of them occurred in the plague of Emmaus in the year eighteen.
