Biography of Zayd ibn al-Khattab
bin Nufayl bin Abdul-Uzza bin Rayah bin Abdullah bin Qart bin Razah bin Adi bin Kaab bin Luay. Abu Abd al-Rahman and his mother's surnames are Asma bint Wahb bin Habib bin al-Harith bin Abs bin Qa'in from Banu Asad. Zaid was older than his brother Omar bin Al-Khattab and converted to Islam before him. Zaid had a son, Abd al-Rahman. His mother was Lubabah bint Abi Lubabah bin Abd al-Mundhir bin Rifa`ah bin Zubayr bin Zaid bin Umayyah bin Zaid bin Malik bin Awf bin Amr bin Awf. Asmaa bint Zaid and her mother Jamila bint Abi Amer bin Saifi. Zaid was a tall, well-bred man. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ - brought brotherhood between Zaid bin Al-Khattab and Ma'n bin Adi bin Al-Ajlan. They were all killed in Al-Yamamah as martyrs. Zaid witnessed Badr, Uhud, the Trench, and all the scenes with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ - and he narrated a hadith about him.
Reported by Muhammad bin Abdullah Al-Asadi, on the authority of his father, who said: Muhammad bin Omar informed us, saying: Al-Hajjaf bin Abdul Rahman, from the descendants of Zaid bin Al-Khattab, narrated to me on the authority of his father, who said: Zaid bin Al-Khattab was carrying the banner of the Muslims on the Day of Al-Yamamah, and the Muslims were exposed until Hanifa prevailed over the travellers. Then Zaid started saying: As for the traveler, there is no traveler, and as for the men, there are no men. Then he started shouting at the top of his voice: Oh Allah, I apologize to you for the flight of my companions and I disavow before you what Musaylimah and Muhakam bin al-Tufayl had brought. He began to pull the banner forward with it to slaughter the enemy and then strike with his sword until he was killed and the banner fell. So Salem, the client of Abu Hudhayfah, took it.
The Muslims said: O Salem, we are afraid of being attacked by you. He said: How miserable is the bearer of the Qur'an if you come before me. Reported by Muhammad bin Omar, on the authority of his grandfather, who said: I heard Omar bin Al-Khattab say to Abu Maryam Al-Hanafi: Did you kill Zaid bin Al-Khattab? He said: Allah honored him with my hand and did not disgrace him with his hand. Omar said: Do you think how many of you Muslims were killed on that day? He said: One thousand four hundred, a little more. Omar said: Wretched are the dead! Abu Maryam said: Praise be to Allah who kept me alive until I returned to the religion that He was pleased with for His Prophet. attic
