Definition of Adversary / Dispute
Al-khasm: source of 'khasamtuhu' (I disputed with him).
One says 'khâsamtuhu wa-khtasamtu ma'ahu' (I fought with him in dispute).
Allah says: 'These are two adversaries (khasmân) who dispute' (Al-Hajj: 19).
The Quran describes believers and disbelievers as adversaries.
And of the people is he whose speech pleases you in worldly life, and he calls Allah to witness as to what is in his heart, yet he is the fiercest of opponents.
That is from the news of the unseen which We reveal to you, [O Muhammad]. And you were not with them when they cast their pens as to which of them should be responsible for Mary. Nor were you with them when they disputed.
Indeed, We have revealed to you, [O Muhammad], the Book in truth so you may judge between the people by that which Allah has shown you. And do not be for the deceitful an advocate.
These are two adversaries who have disputed over their Lord. But those who disbelieved will have cut out for them garments of fire. Poured upon their heads will be scalding water
When they entered upon David and he was alarmed by them? They said, "Fear not. [We are] two adversaries, one of whom has wronged the other, so judge between us with truth and do not exceed [it] and guide us to the sound path.
Surah Sad : 64 Meccan
﴿إِنَّ ذَٰلِكَ لَحَقٌّ تَخَاصُمُ أَهْلِ ٱلنَّارِ﴾
Indeed, that is truth - the quarreling of the people of the Fire.
And they said, "Are your gods better, or is he?" They did not present the comparison except for [mere] argument. But, [in fact], they are a people prone to dispute.
