In the classical doctrine of the four schools, the apostate loses the protection attached to his Islam and falls under a specific penal status. The schools differ markedly on its modalities: the summons to repent before any execution, the delay granted, the case of the woman, that of the sorcerer, or of the one who kills by magic. Each position is reported here to its school, with its proofs and references.
