Definition Al-amara

Al-amara according to Kitab at-Ta'rifat (Al-Jurjani)

In language: the sign; in technical usage: that from whose knowledge conjecture of the existence of the indicated follows, as the cloud in relation to rain, for from knowing it follows conjecture of rain. The difference between the amara and the sign ('alama) is that the sign is inseparable from the thing, as the alif and lam on the noun, while the amara separates from it, as the cloud in relation to rain.

Al-amara according to Mu'jam al-Mustalahat al-Fiqhiyya

In language: the sign. In technical usage: that from whose knowledge conjecture of the existence of what it indicates follows, as the cloud in relation to rain, for from knowing it follows conjecture of rain. Al-amara (with fatha): the sign; and it was defined: what from whose knowledge follows conjecture of the existence of the indicated, as the cloud in relation to rain. It is said: 'al-ammara' (with fatha and doubling of the mim) is in 'al-Ba'itha', Allah the Most High willing; without doubling it is in language and usage as previously explained, and it may also be applied to the decisive proof (dalil qat'i).
