In language: the verbal noun of 'istaqbala shay'an': when he faced it; the sin and ta in this form are not for request, the intensified form here carrying the sense of the simple form, like 'istamarr' and 'istaqarr'; likewise al-muqabala, whose opposite in this sense is al-istidbar. Istiqbal is also used in language in the sense of renewal (ist'inaf); one says 'iqtabala l-amra wa-istaqbala': when he began it anew.
