According to hadith scholars, the gharib is the hadith whose chain of transmission is continuous back to the Messenger of Allah, may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him, but is narrated by a single transmitter, either from the successors or the successors of the successors.
The legal theorists defined it as: that whose specific type influences the specific type of the ruling, while its genus does not influence the genus of the latter, and this by arranging the ruling in accordance with it and establishing it with it in its instances, not through a text or a consensus. Ibn al-Hajib said: The gharib is that whose particular entity is established as being considered in the particular entity of the ruling simply by arranging the ruling in accordance with it, but without it being established by a text or consensus that its particular entity is considered in the genus of the ruling, nor its genus in the particular entity of the ruling, nor its genus in the genus of the ruling. Al-Mujaz fi Usul al-Fiqh, p. 234.
