Al-ishfaq according to Maqalid al-'Ulum (As-Suyuti)

That which affects the soul upon the loss of a beloved object or person.

Al-ishfaq according to At-Tawqif (Al-Munawi)

Care mixed with fear, because the one who feels ashfaq fears what might befall the object of his affection. If the term is used with the preposition min, the meaning of fear is more apparent in it, and if it is used with ala, the meaning of care is more apparent.
