📖 4 min readWhatever intoxicates, from grape juice, or (whatever intoxicates) in general; plural: "khumur". "Al-khamr" is used as masculine and feminine: one says "huwa al-khamr" (he) and "hiya al-khamr" (she); the entry of the ha' is permitted: one says "khamra" meaning a piece (a portion) of khamr; and "al-khammar": its seller. It was named "khamr" because it "covers" (yukhamiru) the intellect, that is, clothes itself with it (covers it).
Concerning the naming of khamr "khamr" there are three opinions. The first: it covers the intellect, that is, conceals it, taken from the "khimar" of the woman with which she covers her head. And "al-khamr" is also the dense vegetation that covers the ground; al-Farra recited from some of the Arabs: "O 'Amr and ad-Dahhak, set out...
you two have indeed had as neighbor the cover (khamr) of the road". The second: the khamr covers itself so that nothing falls into it that would spoil it; it was distinguished by that for the permanence of its quality under the cover and the strength of its odor; from it is the saying of the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him: "Khummiru al-aniya" (cover the vessels) [al-Bukhari, "Bad' al-Khalq", 16], that is: cover them.
"Khamira" (said of a person): madness ("al-khimar") befell him. "Khamira": he complained of drinking khamr. "Khamara" (said of a place): khamr abounded in it.
The covering of a thing (al-Mufradat, p. 159). "Al-khimar": that with which one covers, but it has become, in common usage, the name of that with which the woman covers her head.
And "al-khimar": also the disease that afflicts the head from drinking khamr. And "al-khamr": every intoxicant; some restricted it to what is taken from grapes. And "al-khumra" (with dammah): like a small mat (of straw), the size of what one prostrates upon ("The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, used to pray on a khumra": reported by at-Tirmidhi, who said: a hasan sahih hadith; al-Jami' al-Sahih, 2/151).
It is the raw (uncooked) beverage from date water and raisin water when it boils, intensifies and throws up froth; thus in "al-Hidaya". The root of "khamr" is the covering of a thing, as al-Raghib said.
« They ask you about wine and gambling. Say, "In them is great sin and [yet, some] benefit for people. But their sin is greater than their benefit." And they ask you what they should spend. Say, "The excess [beyond needs]." Thus Allah makes clear to you the verses [of revelation] that you might give thought. »

« And there entered the prison with him two young men. One of them said, "Indeed, I have seen myself [in a dream] pressing wine." The other said, "Indeed, I have seen myself carrying upon my head [some] bread, from which the birds were eating. Inform us of its interpretation; indeed, we see you to be of those who do good." »
Surah يوسف : 36

« And tell the believing women to reduce [some] of their vision and guard their private parts and not expose their adornment except that which [necessarily] appears thereof and to wrap [a portion of] their headcovers over their chests and not expose their adornment except to their husbands, their fathers, their husbands' fathers, their sons, their husbands' sons, their brothers, their brothers' sons, their sisters' sons, their women, that which their right hands possess, or those male attendants having no physical desire, or children who are not yet aware of the private aspects of women.
