Al-knz according to Al-Qamus al-Fiqhi

Of wealth: 'kanzata-hu kanzan': he buried it under the earth; he is then kaniz and kanaz; the wealth is maknuz and kaniz. : He gathered it and stored it. In the noble Quran: 'and those who hoard gold and silver and do not spend it in the way of Allah: give them tidings of a painful punishment' (al-Tawba, 35). : Of the vessel: he filled it to the brim. : Of the spear: he planted it in the earth.

Gathering wealth part upon part and storing it; it is said: the buried wealth. It has become in religion the name of every wealth from which the obligatory has not been paid, though it be not buried.

With fatha and a sukun, from kanaza; (plural) kunuz: the buried wealth whose burier is not known. Treasure. Wealth whose zakat has not been paid. Wealth withheld from circulation, whether its zakat was paid or not.
