📖 3 min readWhat one owns of gold and silver; then it was extended to everything acquired and owned of corporeal goods: it applies to camels, cattle, horses, and sheep, to real estate, trees, and lands, and to gold and silver; it is thus used for all. In 'Al-Qamus' it is said: mal is what you own of anything, or all the individual owns, or the community owns, of goods, merchandise, real estate, money, or livestock.
'Mala fulanun mawlan wa-mu'awlan': he became wealthy, his property multiplied.
Everything gathered by number being multiplied in itself.
Everything the individual owns, or the community owns: goods, merchandise, real estate, money, or livestock. The word is masculine and feminine; plural: amwal. In the pre-Islamic era it was applied to camels. Tha'lab said: the least mal among the Arabs is that on which zakat is due; what falls short of that does not bear the name of mal. Among the Hanafis: what nature inclines to and in which spending and withholding operate; or: what nature inclines to and which can be stored for the time of need. Ibn 'Abidin said: the first definition is preferable. Among the Ja'faris: everything one makes wealth with habitually, whether or not it is of zakat-liable wealth. In the Mejelle (art. 126): it is what man's nature inclines to and which can be kept until the time of need, movable or immovable.

« Righteousness is not that you turn your faces toward the east or the west, but [true] righteousness is [in] one who believes in Allah, the Last Day, the angels, the Book, and the prophets and gives wealth, in spite of love for it, to relatives, orphans, the needy, the traveler, those who ask [for help], and for freeing slaves; [and who] establishes prayer and gives zakah; [those who] fulfill their promise when they promise; and [those who] are patient in poverty and hardship and during battle. Those are the ones who have been true, and it is those who are the righteous. »
Surah
« And their prophet said to them, "Indeed, Allah has sent to you Saul as a king." They said, "How can he have kingship over us while we are more worthy of kingship than him and he has not been given any measure of wealth?" He said, "Indeed, Allah has chosen him over you and has increased him abundantly in knowledge and stature. And Allah gives His sovereignty to whom He wills. And Allah is all-Encompassing [in favor] and Knowing." »
Surah
« O you who have believed, do not invalidate your charities with reminders or injury as does one who spends his wealth [only] to be seen by the people and does not believe in Allah and the Last Day. His example is like that of a [large] smooth stone upon which is dust and is hit by a downpour that leaves it bare. They are unable [to keep] anything of what they have earned. And Allah does not guide the disbelieving people. »
Surah

Surah
« Wherever you may be, death will overtake you, even if you should be within towers of lofty construction. But if good comes to them, they say, "This is from Allah "; and if evil befalls them, they say, "This is from you." Say, "All [things] are from Allah." So what is [the matter] with those people that they can hardly understand any statement? »
