Definition Al-rfʿ

Al-rfʿ according to Dustur al-'Ulama (Al-Ahmadnagari)

To raise. And according to the specialists in arithmetic, it is the expression denoting the conversion of fractions into whole numbers. This is only possible if the numerator of the fraction is greater than its denominator, because if it is equal to it, it is a whole number, and if it is less than it, it is impossible to make it a whole number. Therefore, it must necessarily be greater than the denominator so that it can be validly made into a whole number. The operational method consists of dividing the numerator that is greater than the denominator by the denominator, such that

Al-rfʿ according to At-Tawqif (Al-Munawi)

It is sometimes used for placed bodies when you raise them above their resting place, sometimes for a building when you make it tall, sometimes for a mention when you make it prominent, and sometimes for a status when you honor it. Examples of all these are in the Quran (and in Al-Mufradat, page 200).
