Definition Al-tʿryf

Al-tʿryf according to Kitab at-Ta'rifat (Al-Jurjani)

It denotes the mention of a thing whose knowing entails the knowing of another thing.

Al-tʿryf according to Dustur al-'Ulama (Al-Ahmadnagari)

(Making known, and making like the people of 'Arafat), as in the books of fiqh: at-ta'rif is the gathering of the people on the day of 'Arafa in certain places resembling the standers at 'Arafa; at-ta'rif also: the leading of the sacrificial animal to 'Arafa with oneself, so that the people know it is a sacrificial animal; as in Kanz ad-daqa'iq; the ta'rif with the sacrificial animal is not obligatory.
